Red Bulls gain 3AA wrestling team semifinals

WORTHINGTON — “Third time’s the charm,” Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls head coach Adam Williamson said on Thursday night.

After his team lost to the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove Panthers twice during the regular season, the No. 3-seeded Red Bulls pulled out a 38-27 victory over the No. 2-seeded Panthers during the Section 3AA Team Meet wrestling quarterfinals.

“That was just motivation to get better and beat them when it counted, which was tonight at the section tournament,” Williamson said about the previous duals. “The guys went back to work, got better and they came through tonight. It was awesome, it was a lot of fun.”

The Red Bulls beat the No. 6-seeded Fulda/Murray County Central Warriors, 72-7, in a pigtail dual almost an hour before taking down the Panthers.

Fairmont/Martin County West faces Marshall, the North Sub-Section’s No. 1 seed, in the section semifinals at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Wabasso. Marshall beat No. 5-seeded Redwood Valley, 42-17, to advance.

The Red Bulls held the Panthers to only one win through the first seven matches in the quarterfinals. Dereck Ellingson supplied the Panthers the win with a 15-9 decision over Cale Steuber at 120.

Connor Simmonds started the Red Bulls with a 106-pound pin on Ayden Horner, using only 20 seconds. Jaxson Rohman, who’s ranked second at 106 in Class AA, wrestled at 113 and controlled his match from start to finish. By the end of the first period, Rohman had a 10-4 lead over Levi Ellingson and finished with a 19-7 major decision.

Red Bulls 126-pounder Jordan Wolter supplied another three points with a 7-3 decision against Luis Perez. Wolter started with a 5-0 lead, but Perez got two takedowns in the middle period. The Red Bull, however, put Perez on his back for another takedown and came away with the win.

Zac Ringnell notched a three-point near fall against Chance Dewitte before earning the pin in 54 seconds at 132 for a 19-3 Red Bulls lead. Payton Anderson piled on to the lead with a 10-1 decision over Panthers 128-pounder Tyler Vandendriess before Mario Maldonado defeated Anthony Axford, 9-3, at 145.

Trevor Eisfeld ended the Red Bulls’ win streak by pinning 152-pound wrestler Nathan Simmonds. Eisfeld got two takedowns in the second period before getting Nathan Simmonds on his back for a 3:31 fall.

Nash Mayer brought the Panthers within 11 of the Red Bulls with a 3:56 pin on Miles Fitzgerald at 160.

In the next match, Tristan Lange came out and beat Jace Paplow in a close 5-4 match. Tristan Lange had a 4-0 lead going into the third period, and Paplow opted for the down position.

Paplow was able to escape and later earned a takedown against Tristan Lange. But the Red Bulls’ 170-pounder managed to keep Paplow from getting the comeback win.

“Tristan Lange’s win was probably the biggest of the night against a really tough kid,” Williamson said. “That really decided the dual and Collin slammed the door with that pin there at 182.”

Collin Steuber, ranked sixth at 152, took on the Panthers’ 182-pounder Tyler Timm and used only 1:54 to pin him for a 25-15 Red Bulls advantage.

“Those two in a row were the deciding factor, but it takes everybody to do their part to put us in that position to put a team away like that,” Williamson added.

Jacob Rahn added the last touch for the Red Bulls, notching a 6-3 win over Grif Radke at 195.

Austin Buchholz and Sam Bauer pinned their opponents at 220 and 285, respectively, for a 38-27 final score.

Buchholz pinned Conner Tordsen in 2:50, while Bauer took one minute off the clock for a fall against Theo Krumholz.

Katerina Lange, Cale Steuber and James Joyner won earlier matches against the Warriors.

“They (Fulda/Murray County Central) only had five possible wrestlers, so we got some alternates in there. We let them get their time to shine and they won (three) of them. It was good preparation,” Williamson said.

Katerina Lange wrestled at 106 and pinned Dawson Blankenship in 1:38, while Cale Steuber pinned 120-pounder Christian Kuball in 1:17. Joyner used only 43 seconds to flatten Jesse Ray at 126.

Danny Blankenship beat Lucas Jagodzinski, 13-3, and Jon Gehl defeated Nathan Simmonds, 4-1, at 113 and 152, respectively for the Warriors.
