BLUE EARTH — Joe Schavey missed nearly the entire regular wrestling season due to a wrist injury, but the 126-pound junior jumpstarted Class A, No. 10-ranked Blue Earth Area’s avalanche of points during Section 2 Team Meet action Thursday night.

Schavey delivered an 18-5 major decision over Blaine Zernechel to inch the No. 2-seeded Bucs within 9-8 on the scoreboard before his teammates reeled off victories in nine of the next 10 matches to post a 55-15 sectional quarterfinal rout over the No. 7-seeded Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Knights in Blue Earth.

Blue Earth Area (19-4) advances to face No. 3-seeded Maple River at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Section 2 team semifinals at United South Central High School in Wells. Maple River reached the next round by routing No. 6-seeded USC, 52-18.

“Joe Schavey allowed our lineup to have a little more flexibility to it tonight. Once again, we were able to move some guys around and the strategy paid off,” said Blue Earth Area head coach Randy Wirtjes. “We had just wrestled these guys (the Knights) a couple of weeks ago, and our guys came prepared to wrestle tonight.

“It was definitely a total team effort, and now we get the opportunity to wrestle again on Saturday.”

Jaxon Klinkner followed Schavey’s lead by keeping the points piling up on the Bucs’ side of the team ledger by recording one of the No. 2 seed’s four falls on the sectional dual meet. Klinkner pinned Brendan Jones in 1:19 during 132-pound action to swing a 14-9 lead to the Bucs.

Dalton Nagel received a forfeit at 138 for Blue Earth Area before Rylee McGuire transformed a 4-0 lead over Tristan Jones into a fall in 3:22 at the 145-pound spot in the lineup.

Cole Klinkner, who holds the No. 6 spot in the 145-pound state poll, and Buc teammate Zach Buseman, who’s ranked No. 3 at 152, each moved up a weight bracket and combined to produce eight team tallies. Cole Klinkner outdueled Avery Northquest, 9-4, in a 152-pound match of reversals, while Buseman nearly pinned Elijah Northquest twice before settling for a 16-0 technical fall at 160.

LCWM junior 170-pounder Jeremiah Colon, who holds the No. 6 spot at that weight in the Class A state rankings, interrupted BEA’s scoring string by posting a fall in 5:06.

Jesus Quintero did not waste any time in reversing the scoring trend back to the Bucs by pressing Matt Thofson’s shoulders to the canvas in 1:38 during 182-pound action.

No. 5-ranked 195-pounder Jared Armon pinned Garrett Gilman in 5:30 to extend BEA’s team margin to 46-15 before teammate Jordan Huse doubled the score on Blake Stenzel, 8-4, during 220-pound action. Buc heavyweight Trevor Oppedal received a forfeit to cap the runaway victory.

Davis Sunken delivered four quick team points for the Bucs by amassing a 13-0 major decision over Trayton Hewitt at 106.

LCWM’s Tyler Ash countered by pinning Caleb Beeler in 3:49 at 113 before Knights teammate Caleb Clobes posted an 8-2 decision over Caden Ochsendorf at 120. Clobes is ranked No. 6 in the 106-pound state bracket.
