Red Bulls outgrapple St. James Area

SHERBURN — Fresh off another Valley Conference title, the Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls wrestling team took a 41-24 win over the St. James Area Saints in the regular-season finale on Thursday night.

“We’re kind of getting on a roll from last Friday night and getting a couple big wins to Tuesday and getting three big wins and winning the Valley Conference and leading into tonight in the finale of the regular season,” Red Bulls head coach Adam Williamson said. “I feel like we’re peaking at the right time and coming together as a team.”

Payton Anderson and Class AA, No. 6-ranked, 152-pound Collin Steuber earned pins to help the Red Bulls to the 17-point victory.

“That’s huge. That really racks up points for building a lead in the dual and making a statement as well,” Williamson said.

Payton Anderson earned two points on a takedown before pinning Landon Hoppe in 1:04 at the 138. Steuber wrestled at 182 and took only 47 seconds to beat Riley Sandmeyer via a fall.

Connor Simmonds opened the meet with a 16-2 major decision over Troy Parluski to get the Red Bulls an early lead. The 106-pounder earned seven points in the opening period and nearly pinned Parluski in the second.

Class A, No. 10-ranked 113-pounder Sam Kulseth responded for the Saints by edging out a 9-8 decision over Jaxson Rohman, who is ranked second in the Class AA 106-pound weight class. Rohman had the early advantage over Kulseth with a 6-3 lead. But Kulseth earned a takedown and near fall to nab the one-point win at 113.

Cale Steuber then added four Red Bulls points by earning an 11-2 major decision against Saints 120-pounder Alex Hanson. Steuber had the early advantage, going into the final period with a 8-0 lead. Hanson got two points on a reverse, but Cale Steuber escaped for his last point of the match.

Saints wrestler Nelson Cuellar posted two takedowns en route to a 6-0 win over Jordan Wolter for three points at 126. Tallin Johnson added a 2:43 pin on 145-pound Nathan Simmonds before the Red Bulls won the next four straight matches.

Mario Maldonado was the catalyst in the 16-point surge and beat Maxwell Svalland, 9-2, at the 152 weight class. Miles Fitzgerald followed with a 9-6 decision over 160-pound Jacob Brey. Tristan Lange jumped out to a 6-1 lead after a period to defeat Tony Rodriguez, 19-6, before Collin Steuber chipped in a fall.

At 195, Saints wrestler Ruben Suarez pinned Jacob Rahn in one minute before No. 10-ranked, 220-pound Shawn Hillesheim won by forfeit for the Saints’ final points.

No. 9-ranked Zac Ringnell and Theo Krumholz each took forfeits for the Red Bulls at 126 and 285, respectively.

“We moved some guys around in the lineup, bumped some guys up higher in weight to see how they would handle it, and it worked for us really well tonight,” Williamson said. “We’re ready to roll with the team we have now into next Thursday against Fulda/Murray County Central and then on to Tracy-Milroy-Balaton, hopefully, after that in the second round.”

Fairmont/Martin County West, the No. 3 seed, faces No. 6-seeded Fulda/Murray County Central to open Section 3AA Team Meet action at 6 p.m. next Thursday in Worthington.

The Red Bulls–Fulda Murray County Central winner wrestles No. 2-seeded Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove right after the first match.
