FHS’ 2nd-chance baskets floor USC

FAIRMONT — Fairmont converted its height advantage into 18 offensive rebounds and pivotal second-half second chances to withstand United South Central center Ryan Kloos’ game-high 34-point performance on Tuesday night.

Derek Missling, a 6-foot-6 power forward, and 6-7 center Walker Tordsen combined for 35 points and 17 boards, while 6-2 forward Brady Allen added 11 points and eight clutch caroms to pace the hometown Cardinals’ 69-57 non-league basketball win over the Rebels in Fairmont.

“Our stat guys had us grabbing nearly half of our total rebounds (37) at the offensive end tonight,” said Fairmont head coach Jared Thompson. “Those extra possessions were key in helping us maintain the momentum, especially with us missing a number of free throws down the stretch.”

Clinging to a 40-36 lead early in the second half, Missling’s low-post conversion for two of his team-best 18 points triggered the Cardinals’ 10-2 mini-run to create breathing room on the scoreboard.

Tordsen, who finished with a double-double performance of 17 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, banked home a putback basket before teammate Tyler Johnson drilled a 3-pointer for a 47-36 lead with 10 minutes left in regulation.

Senior guard Kyle Brandt, who produced 13 points to go with four steals and three assists off the bench, hit a baseline runner for USC only to watch as sophomore post player Lucas Denney notched three points for a 50-38 Fairmont lead.

Tordsen’s second slam dunk off one of Nate Kallenbach’s four assists ignited the hometown fans before Kloos warmed up the Cardinal Gym nets.

Kloos, who also garnered a game-best 12 boards, hit a low-post leaner before Allen countered for the Cardinals with a 3-pointer.

Kloos then drilled three consecutive trifectas — en route to a 7-for-12 shooting performance behind the arc on the night — to eclipse the 1,000-point career scoring plateau and whittled USC’s deficit to 57-51 with 4:08 remaining.

Despite Fairmont’s shooting woes at the free throw line — 8 of 24 on the game, including 7 of 22 in the second half, the towering trio of Allen, Missling and Tordsen kept the Cardinals in possession of the basketball via their tipouts and/or offensive rebounds down the stretch.

Kallenbach delivered an end-to-end lay-in before Allen contributed four pivotal points to seal Fairmont’s 12-point decision.

Missling added seven rebounds to go with his 18 points, Denney and Sam Schwieger chipped in seven points apiece, while Kallenbach scored six. Schwieger also doled out a game-best six assists, while Kallenbach collected three steals and four assists.
