Magic gymnasts net 2nd at own invite

WELCOME — The Class A, No. 21-ranked Martin County Area Magic and No. 14 Jackson County Central Huskies squared off for the second time during their five-part seasonal gymnastics series at the four-team MCA Invite in Welcome.

Brooklyn Schuett, Abby Schneekloth and Hailey Handevidt produced a 2-3-4 showing in the all-around competition with respective point totals of 35.5, 35.45 and 34.325 to help the Huskies edge the Magic, 140.4-138.3, for top team honors on Saturday.

Bryanna Peterson, Maiya Dietz and Sabrina Segar, however, countered by capturing first (37.425), fifth (34.15) and eighth (32.825) overall to guide MCA to its season-best team score.

Peterson nearly made a clean individual sweep by striking gold on the vault (9.35), uneven bars (9.675) and balance beam (9.45), with Schneekloth edging Schuett on the judges’ criteria after both netted 9.2s on the floor exercise.

Dietz broke into the top six by placing fourth on the beam (8.725) and fifth on the unevens (8.425), while teammate Brielle Meade and Peterson took fourth (8.975) and fifth (8.95) on the floor, respectively.

“We didn’t have our best beam set as we had to count a couple of falls, but we came pretty close to matching JCC today on that event,” Magic mentor LeeAnn Steen said in reference to the Huskies’ narrow 34.475-34.225 edge on the 4-inch-wide apparatus.

MCA did squeeze by JCC on the unevens, 34.425-34.225, with Peterson and Dietz paving the way. Peterson executed the invite’s No. 1 individual score on the bars by transforming a handstand into a back giant before hitting a blind change. Peterson continued with a front giant, counter-swing, back giant and toe-front dismount.

Schneekloth, Schuett and Handevidt, however, swept the top three spots on the floor to help JCC outdistance MCA on the piece, 36.275-34.85.

Schneekloth, Schuett and Hachelle Carson delivered second (9.0), third (8.925) and fourth (8.85), respectively, to power the Huskies to a 35.425-34.8 edge over the Magic on the vault.

Both JCC and MCA continued to improve upon their season-opening dual meet in Jackson. The Huskies bettered their winning Dec. 1 score of 133.975 by 6.425 points, while the Magic improved by 8.425 points on their initial tally of 129.875.

The pair of long-time rivals will clash three more times this season, including the Sweetheart Invite on Saturday in Jackson, potentially the Big South Conference Duals Championship on Feb. 11 in Welcome and the Section 3A Meet on Feb. 18 in Windom.

“Our kids continue to work hard in the gym and are showing signs of improvement each week, so that’s encouraging,” said Steen.

Madison Schandelmeier claimed sixth place in the all-around with a total of 34.075 to pace Luverne’s third-place team score of 132.3, while Melissa Hagedorn generated an all-around score of 28.375 to top Blue Earth Area’s fourth-place team total of 102.025.

Martin County Area plays host to St. Peter on Tuesday night in Welcome, Blue Earth Area travels to Worthington on Tuesday night, while Jackson County Central plays host to Luverne on Friday night in Jackson.
