Cardinals’ JV pockets tourney
MANKATO — The Fairmont Cardinals boys JV basketball team won the Bethany Lutheran Holiday tournament.
Wyatt Quiring scored 34 points overall, including 17 in the Cardinals’ 60-40 championship win over Minnesota Valley Lutheran. Hayden Berhow tallied 11 points and Nick Eversman had eight points.
The Cardinals beat St. Croix Lutheran, 33-15, to open tournament play. Dustin Schultz and Carter Klanderud finished with nine and seven points, respectively.
Fairmont topped New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva, 48-42, to advance to the championship. Lucas Denney scored 13 points and Berhow had seven points.
8th-graders win two at New Ulm
NEW ULM — Fairmont boys’ eighth-grade basketball teams defeated New Ulm on Jan. 5. The Cardinals A team won, 30-23. Jacob Melsha led the team with 10 points, while Tanner Rosch scored eight points. Jackson Francis added seven points.
Fairmont’s B team won, 28-10. Francis scored 11 points. Steven Schrunk supplied six points, and both Klanderud and Ameya Komaragiri totaled four points.
Fairmont plays at Mankato East today.
Fairmont 12U edges Windom
FAIRMONT — Windom edged Fairmont, 3-2, during 12U girls hockey action on Sunday. Alexis Newville and Emily Sokoloski scored a goal apiece for Fairmont. Chantel Moeller and Karissa Newville both had an assist. Rachel O’Connor made 18 saves.
Fairmont (6-9) plays in a tournament on Jan. 20-22 in Austin.
Bantam B team 0-2 on weekend
FAIRMONT — Fairmont’s Bantam B team lost two games during Hockey Day Saturday at Martin County Arena.
Windom beat Fairmont, 6-0, and New Ulm/Sleepy Eye beat Fairmont, 7-3. Seth Becker, Hudson Artz and Carson Peters each scored against NUSE. Jacob Bocock had two assists, while Carson Kuhl issued one. Fairmont plays at Albert Lea at 8 p.m. Thursday.
