MCW outduels WEM for ‘A’ crown

FAIRMONT – Skilled diversified depth and the power of pink socks steered the Martin County West Mavericks to the Class A girls team championship for the second consecutive season at Friday night’s Sentinel Relays track & field meet at Bob Bonk Track in Fairmont.

Morgan Larson, Brooke Anderson, Marissa Whitehead, Nicole Sherer and Cora Olson each produced five individual gold medals for Martin County West, while Anderson and Whitehead traded handoffs with Logan Kosbab and Whitney Smith to capture top accolades in the 4×800 relay.

The Mavericks stampeded their way to 13 total medals, including three silver and four bronze, to overpower talented newcomer Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, 144-118 1/3, in the smaller-enrollment division.

“I think we had a pretty strong showing tonight, but we’ll have to wait until we see the final point standings,” Martin County West head coach Curtis Smith said with a smile prior to exiting the Fairmont facility after the 61st running of the Relays was called due to lightning with only the 4×400 relay to be run.

Anderson ran the opening leg of the Mavericks’ winning 4×800 relay before the handoffs sequence went from Kosbab to Whitehead to Smith for a first-place time of 10:31.57.

Anderson did not get much of a breather, however, as the long-distance specialist pocketed her first-ever individual varsity gold medal in track & field by winning the 1,600-meter run in 6:05.5.

“My time was a little slow today due to not being used to the heat,” Anderson said in reference to the rare mid-80 temperatures. “I know it sounds weird, but I love the cold weather to run in.”

Larson, another Maverick cross country runner, made a silky-smooth transition to the hurdles and delivered a 1-2 showing to generate clutch points.

Larson crossed the finish line in the high hurdles in a silver-medal time of 18.28 seconds before winning the 300 hurdles by posting a time of 48.35.

“I usually wear blue socks, but I went with pink ones today,” Larson said with a smile. “Actually, this is only the third time that I’ve ever run the high hurdles, and just the second time in the 300s.”

Martin County West’s high-achieving hurdles novice added two of her three silver medals by sprinting to second in the open 200 (27.62) and clearing 32 feet, 4 1/2 inches in the triple jump.

Olson, like Larson, packed scoring punch for the Mavericks on both the track and in the field. Olson struck gold in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet even, while earning bronze medals in both the open 100 (14.06) and 400 (1:05.69).

Sherer demonstrated another strong showing in the throws for the Mavericks, capturing top accolades by hurling the discus to a winning distance of 114-0. Sherer also claimed third in the shot put with a heave of 31-9 1/2.

Whitehead rounded out MCW’s gold-medal performances by making her move in the passing lanes during lap 7 of 8 to earn the 3,200-meter crown in 12:11.03.

WEM sprinter Maelea Harmon proved a double-winner in Class A by pocketing the open 100 (13.08) and 200 (26.44), while Buc teammate Samantha Petry established a new Class A Relays record by winning the pole vault by clearing 10-9. Petry, the defending Minnesota State High School League state pole vault champion, shattered the previous Relays mark of 9-9 set twice by Murray County Central’s Teresa Kremer in 1999 and 2001, and Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet’s Hayley Reed in 2007.

Lily Anderson, who will run track for Augustana College next season, produced a first-place showing in the 400 (1:00.19) for WEM, while teammate Avianna Swanson cleared 32-9 to win the triple jump.

Claire Cutler won the shot with a heave of 33-4 to pace the Fairmont junior varsity’s fourth-place team total of 93 1/3, while teammates Grace Higgins and Mikayla Stradtman chipped in a silver and a bronze in the long jump with leaps of 14-9 1/2 and 14-5 1/2, respectively.

Martin County West competes in the Section True Team Meet at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Wells.
