What most people don't understand is that the farmer cannot set his price for what he sells like other businesses. If the farmer is not protected somehow and the food supply becomes short, everyone pays the price in the grocery store. We are so lucky to have cheap food in this country.

Federal crop insurance is part of the farm bill. In a business that relies on the weather, being protected against crop failure is extremely important. I am guessing that most people who voted that there should not be a farm bill has no idea what the farm bill does.

How many people are aware of how much of the farm bill goes to supplemental nutrition, such as food stamps and WIC? People also ask why these items aren't two separate bills. If these were separate, non-farming state representatives would never pass a farm bill. Direct payments and subsidies are gone. I hope they pass a bill soon so us farmers can have insurance in future years.
