Suburban Boston tornado modest EF-2 on 0-5 scale

July 28, 2014
Associated Press

REVERE, Mass. (AP) — The National Weather Service says a tornado that landed just north of Boston was a relatively modest EF-2 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale of 0 to 5, but it damaged dozens of buildings.

Revere Mayor Daniel Rizzo says 65 homes and businesses were damaged and 13 are uninhabitable. About 2,800 residences are without power.

The city has opened a temporary shelter at a middle school.

The tornado caused no major injuries or deaths. The weather service says it had maximum wind gusts of 100 to 120 mph and carved a path of about 2 miles through the coastal city of 50,000 residents.

The tornado touched down at 9:32 a.m. near the Chelsea-Revere line and was on the ground about 4 minutes.
