WILMONT - A 4-0 pitching record on the strength of an incredible 60 strikeouts during the Region 13C amateur baseball playoffs.
Fairmont ace right-hander Taylor Nawrocki continued his postseason dominance on the mound during Game 1 of Wednesday night's best-of-3, regional third-place series at Butts Probst Field in Wilmont.
Nawrocki notched 12 strikeouts while firing a four-hit complete-game gem to engineer the Martins' 8-0 triumph over the Wilmont Cardinals.
Fairmont (23-10) hosts Wilmont (16-6) in Game 2 of the survive-to-stay-alive playoff series at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont. The winner advances to the Minnesota Class 'C' state tournament, while the loser's season ends.
"He (Nawrocki) attacked the (strike) zone tonight like he has all season," said Fairmont veteran outfielder Ian Bents, who contributed one of Fairmont's 15 hits and two of the team's eight RBIs on the night.
Nawrocki recorded 17 strikeouts in tossing a four-hit complete game to pace the Martins' 3-2 Game 1 victory over the Jackson Bulls on July 30.
Ironically, Fairmont's hard-throwing ace also delivered a season-best 18 strikeouts during his three-hit complete-game shutout in a 6-0 Game 1, second-round series win over Hadley on July 23.
Nawrocki opened the 2014 regional playoffs by recording 13 strikeouts and allowing only two hits over six innings during the Martins' first-round 14-0, seven-inning win over Tracy on July 16.
Levi Becker, Shaun McGuire, Adam Schmidt, Taylor Morris, Dustin Sobolik and Jon Ellis each produced two hits to pace Fairmont's offensive attack.
Levi Becker delivered two RBIs, McGuire slugged a ninth-inning solo home run, while Schmidt doubled twice to drive in one run. Sobolik and Ellis also collected RBIs, while Scott Chirpich and Luke Becker added one hit apiece.
