REDWOOD FALLS - The St. James American Legion Post 33 baseball lineup achieved a rarity during Division II, District 2 tournament action in Redwood Falls.
St. James battled through the elimination bracket to dethrone 2013 district champion Winnebago/Blue Earth, 10-6, Saturday to earn a bid to the state tournament.
St. James (21-6), which defeated WBE 7-3 on Friday to force the 'if necessary' Game 2 on Saturday, opens state action at 4 p.m. Friday against the District 8 champion in Luverne.
WBE ended its season with a 10-9 record.
Ryan Menssen, Walker Froehling, David Bradley, Tyler Witcraft and Brady Halvorson each produced two hits to pace St. James, which erupted for seven runs during the first inning.
Branson Petersen, Bradley and Witcraft each notched doubles, Witcraft and Petersen each generated two RBIs, while Bradley and Halvorson scored two runs apiece for Post 33.
Menssen allowed three runs on four hits, recorded seven strikeouts and issued only one walk in 4 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win.
Derrick Shupe started on the hill for Post 33, allowing three runs on six hits and walked one.
Brandyn Olsen and Christian Haugh each connected for three hits for WBE. Haugh and Seth Anderson each connected for two-run home runs on the game.
Mathew Bell gave up three runs on six hits, fanned four and walked three in 5 1/3 solid innings of relief for WBE.
Quinn Huisman started for WBE, giving up seven runs on seven hits and struck out one in 2/3s of an inning to take the loss.
