GRANADA - The teachers will become the students at Granada-Huntley-East Chain during the upcoming term, as staff members participate in a series of technology training sessions.
School staff has access to a buffet of technology: Google Docs, White Boards, Apple IPAD and more.
"We can have all the technology in the world, but if it doesn't impact student learning, it's a waste of money," said recently hired Superintendent Dale Brandsoy at his inaugural board meeting Thursday. "How can we get them all on board? That's a real challenge."
Rick Uttech, elementary designee, reported that staff committees had met three times this summer and proposed several two-hour late starts during the school year, with the time used for additional training sessions. Sessions already are planned for Aug. 26-28, and Uttech suggested six more sessions through mid-February.
The decision will be made when the school calendar is finalized at the August school board meeting.
The board also discussed sports sharing with Truman and Martin Luther High School. Terry Bentele, activities director, updated the board on several points, including practice and game venues.
No action was taken, with Robert Garry, board chairman, indicating that any final approval should be made by the full board. Board members Chris Pytleski and Tim Pytleski were absent, so Garry said he would conduct an email poll of board members and relay the results to Bentele.
In other business, the board voted to raise school lunches by a nickel, with elementary now at $2.35, high school at $2.50 and adults at $3.30. The cost for breakfast, $1.65, and elementary morning milk, 40 cents, remains unchanged.
In other action, the board:
o Accepted the resignation of Caitlin Dempsey as art instructor.
o Established filing dates from July 29 to 5 p.m. Aug. 12 for school board candidates. Seats held by Amy Maday, Bryan Nowicki and Troy Jensen will be on the ballot. Candidates can file at the district office in Granada.
o Changed the date of the August board meeting to 5 p.m. Aug. 7.
o Asked for volunteers, ages 16 and older, to sort books for the elementary accelerated reading program. Anyone wishing to help should be at the East Chain school at 8 a.m. July 16. More information is available by calling MerriDee Shumski at the elementary school.
