FAIRMONT - Looking for a new job can be a daunting task. Driving from place to place, waiting for an interview, trying to connect with the right person - it's enough to make anyone frustrated.
People seeking a new job or career change will face a streamlined process Tuesday at a free job fair at Five Lakes Centre in Fairmont. More than 30 businesses will participate in the event, which runs from 3-6 p.m.
The job fair is the brainchild of Callie Austin of the Fairmont Area Chamber of Commerce and Connie Hines of the Fairmont Workforce Center.
"It's a regional thing," Austin said. "People live here and still commute to Jackson. People live here and still commute to Blue Earth."
Austin called the event a collaborative effort with chambers of commerce from St. James, Blue Earth, Jackson and Madelia, the Fairmont Workforce Center, the South Central Workforce Council, whose grant funded the event, and Five Lakes Centre, which is donating space and furnishings.
"It was kind of amazing," Austin said about the response from businesses. "We've got the employers. Now we just want the job-seekers there."
"[These employers] are actively looking to hire people, either right now or very shortly," Hines said.
She advised prospective employees to dress nicely and come prepared with a resume.
"Prepare your 30- to 60-second 'commercial' explaining what you're interested in and what you have to offer," she said.
Hines encouraged anyone who would like assistance preparing for the job fair to stop in at the Fairmont Workforce Center, located in the mall, on Monday or Tuesday. Staff will be happy to assist, she said.
Presentation College representatives also will be on hand at the fair to serve as a resource for job-seekers who might need additional training.
Representatives from the following businesses will participate: 3M, Avery Weigh-Tronix, Brand FX, C & B Operations, Center for Specialty Care, Christensen Farms, Doherty Staffing Solutions, Express Diagnostics International Inc., HitchDoc, Hugoson Pork, Kahler Automation, Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center, Marketlink Inc., Masterson Staffing Solutions, Milk Specialties Global, Minnesota Energy Resources, MPI Farms of Amboy, NAPA Auto & Truck Parts of Fairmont, Perkins of Fairmont, Pizza Hut of Fairmont, Presentation College, REM Heartland, Shoe Sensation, Southern Plains Education Cooperative, St. Luke's Lutheran Care Center, Teachers on Call, Thrivent Financial, TPI Hospitality (Torgerson Properties), True Value of Fairmont, U.S. Marines, Valero Renewables and WFS.
