Lorraine Magdalene (Miller) Balske was born July 10, 1925, in Fairmont Township, Fairmont, Minn., at the home of her parents, Ray A. and Julia (Dollen) Miller. The location is presently recognized as a Century Farm. In her youth, Lorraine was an active member in 4-H and later as an adult leader. She won local, state, and national 4-H honors with her various projects. Taking her sewing entry to Chicago, representing Martin County and the state of Minnesota, was a highlight for her. Lorraine attended Rural School District #21, Fairmont Township and graduated as class valedictorian from Fairmont High School in 1943. Financial limitations kept her from continuing her education. Lorraine's secretarial career began at Railway Motors following graduation. Lorraine and Dale E. Balske were united in marriage Sept. 24, 1949, at First Congregational Church in Fairmont. They moved to her parents' farm in 1950, living there throughout their married years. Following their marriage, she became secretary in the Fairmont School System for over 46 years.

Lorraine's personal lack of opportunity to receive a post-secondary education instilled in her a deep concern for the furtherance of education of area graduates. This inspired her to become a founding board member of the Citizens' Scholarship Foundation, now known as Dollars For Scholars. Her unwavering dedication to the mission of DFS assisted in providing hundreds of students with scholarship monies. Lorraine received the Dollars For Scholars National Volunteer of the Year Award in 2010, along with many other awards and honors throughout her career. She was also active in church activities, Partners in Education, Community Education and Recreation Board, and the Opera House Stage Hands. Lorraine named Jesus Christ as her Savior and Lord. She enjoyed being a member of various choirs and singing His praises.

Lorraine is survived by extended family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Balske; and her parents, Ray and Julia Miller.
