Cardinals cruise by Luverne

LUVERNE - The Fairmont Cardinals boys basketball team sailed past the Luverne Cardinals 75-59 during nonconference action on Saturday in Luverne.

Jay Ruen scored a co-team high 20 points to go along with three rebounds and three assists to help pace the visiting Cardinals in the victory.

Mitch Pfingsten also came away with 20 points and doled out four assists for Fairmont, while Josh Eversman netted 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

Ben Abel and Nick Roggow each contributed eight points and three rebounds for the Cardinals who made 31 of 52 from inside the arc.

Fairmont made 5 of 12 from behind the 3-point line, while swishing 8 of 12 from the charity stripe.

Fairmont (17-3, 7-2 SCC) travels to play Martin County West in a 5:45 p.m. nonconference game today in Trimont.

Luverne eased by the Fairmont Cardinals 71-54 during B-squad basketball action on Saturday in Luverne.

Tyler Tennyson poured in 15 points and pocketed five steals to top the Cardinals.

Walker Tordsen and Josh Liljenquist contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively for Fairmont.

Martin County West 48, Cleveland 46 - The Martin County West Mavericks rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to come back and beat the Cleveland Clippers 48-46 during Valley Conference action on Saturday in Cleveland.

Jake Faber scored a team-leading 16 points, while Jake Sinn netted 12 for the Mavericks in the win.

The Mavericks made 7 of 10 from the free throw line in the second half surge, while holding the Clippers to just 19 second-half points.

Senior forward Jordan Phillips scored a game-high 20 points for the Clippers, while Carter Kopet netted 14 in the game.

Spencer Lynch recorded 10 points for Cleveland, who made 3 of 6 free throw attempts.

Martin County West (11-6) plays host to Fairmont in a 5:45 p.m. game today in Trimont.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain 68, North Union 52 - Logan Pytleski scored 25 points and pulled down eight rebounds to pace the Mustangs to a 68-52 nonconference victory over the Warriors on Saturday in Armstrong.

Ryan Shumski poured in 17 points, while Trent Stensland neared double-double territory with 13 points and seven rebounds for the Mustangs.

Josh Johanson tallied four points and doled out five assists, while Jared Green distributed six helpers in the win.

The Mustangs sank 27 of 45 shots from inside the 3-point line, while making just 2 of 8 from three and 8 of 16 from the free throw line.

Alex Krantz scored a team-leading 13 points, while Aric Runge contributed 11 to top the Warriors.

Kaleb Olson and Corey Vaske added seven and six points, respectively for the Warriors, who made 16 of 28 for 2 and 5 of 18 from 3-point land.

The Warriors also made 5 of 14 tosses from the free throw line.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain (5-9, 4-5 Valley) plays host to Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton in a makeup game at 7:30 p.m. today in East Chain.

Girls Basketball

North Union 57, Granada-Huntley-East Chain 40 - Aurora Oliver scored a game-high 15 points and helped pace the Warriors to a 57-40 nonconference victory over the Mustangs on Saturday in Armstrong.

Oliver also pulled down five rebounds and pocketed five steals.

Alexis Valvick contributed 13 points and doled out three assists, while making three steals for the Warriors.

Madison Bollig tallied 12 points, while Sarah Rolling recorded 11 in the win.

The Warriors made 7 of 18 from outside the arc, while swishing 17 of 42 for 2 and sinking 16 of 23 free throws.

Emily Zaharia scored a team-leading 14 points, while Brooke McDonald netted nine for the Mustangs.

Rachel Shumski scored eight points, pulled down six rebounds and doled out three assists, while Kenlie Pytleski grabbed seven boards.

The Mustangs made 14 of 47 from the floor, including 10 for 30 from inside the arc, and swished 8 of 12 from the free throw line.

North Union (10-4, 6-1 Corn Belt) plays host to Manson-Northwest Webster at 6 p.m. today in Armstrong.
