MANKATO - Memorial services for Richard D. Bremer, 77, of Mankato, Minn., formerly of Fairmont, will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at Lakeview Funeral Home Chapel in Fairmont, Minn. Inurnment with full military honors by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County VFW Post 1222 will follow in Fairview Memorial Park, Fairmont.
Richard passed away peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 14, 2014, surrounded by his family at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Mankato. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services Saturday at Lakeview Funeral Home.
Richard Dean Bremer was born June 26, 1936, at his parent's home in Silver Lake Township, Martin County, Minn., the son of Everett and Edith (Rudebeck) Bremer. Richard attended school District 109, St. Paul Lutheran School and Fairmont High School. On Dec. 29, 1956, Richard was united in marriage to Sheila Shea. The couple later divorced. Richard served in the U.S. Army from 1956 until 1960. After receiving an honorable discharge, he began working as a mechanic as well as a carpenter and remodeling his home. Richard also worked at Alumacraft, Land of Memories and at Kristico. In 1971, Richard was united in marriage to Mary Kay Vorwald. The couple later divorced. During his free time, Richard enjoyed the outdoors and nature, gardening, photography, model trains, pets and having coffee at Happy Chef. Following a stroke in 2008, he resided at Cedar Haven Assisted Living in Mankato and then moved to the Hillcrest Health Care Center in February 2013.
Survivors include: his six children, Bradley (Jane) Bremer of Savage, Minn., Bridgette (Randy) Jackson of Carver, Minn., Bill (Gena) Bremer of Burlington, Ky., Stephanie (Nick) Hillmer of Welcome, Minn., Lori (Jim) Harms of Forest Lake, Minn., and Todd (KaChee) Bremer of North St. Paul, Minn.; grandchildren, Lana and Melissa Bremer, Shane and Noah Jackson, Kayla, Nathan and Matthew Bremer, Darin and Calleigh Hillmer, Hunter and Tanner Harms, Laurel, Boe and Geneva Bremer; sisters, Donna (Jon) Harley of Inver Grove Heights, and Dolores (James) Baarts of Fairmont, Minn.; aunts, Agnes (Ellerich) Fritz of Fairmont, Minn., and Elvera Bremer Goetsch of Leland, N.C.; brother-in-law, Gerald O'Sell; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Along with his parents, Everett and Edith Bremer, Richard was preceded in death by his infant son, Brian; sister, Barbara O'Sell; and former wife, Mary Kay Schaefer.
