BLUE EARTH - After the Blue Earth Area Bucs wrestling team jumped out to a 24-9 lead, Class AA, No. 7-ranked 152-pounder Joe Weber got the Red Bulls within striking distance with a win at 152 pounds.

The Bucs, however, would not be denied, rallying for a 48-18 South Central Conference dual victory on Friday night in Blue Earth.

"We knew that they had a big win over St. James, so we weren't overlooking tonight's match at all," said Blue Earth Area head coach Randy Wirtjes. "The score was not indicative of the meet - there were a lot of close matches tonight."

Jordan Stelter needed just 48 seconds in the 138-pound match to give the Bucs a 24-9 edge.

Stelter pinned the Red Bulls' Levi Bulfer in 48 seconds to increase the Bucs' comfortable lead.

Adam Legred got the Bucs started with a pin of Christian Hugget at 4:35 in the 106-pound match, but the Red Bulls' Collin Steuber kept the visitors close.

Steuber outlasted Zach Buseman in quadruple overtime to earn the 4-3 decision.

Buseman got on the board first, scoring a point on a penalty for a 1-0 lead going into the second period. Steuber then evened the score by earning an escape to make it 1-1 after two periods.

Buseman escaped out of the down position to start the third period for a point to retake the lead, before Steuber reversed Buseman to go ahead 3-2 with just over a minute left in the match.

Buseman then tied the score as the period expired with another penalty point.

Neither wrestler scored in the opening three overtimes, but Steuber kept Buseman from escaping for 30 seconds in the ultimate overtime which gave him the one-point win to cut the Bucs' team lead in half at 6-3.

"There were a couple of close matches that went our way tonight in the meet, and a couple of close ones that didn't," said Fairmont/Martin County West head coach Adam Williamson. "We knew it'd be a tall order coming in here tonight, but our guys battled hard and I'm proud of them for that."

Red Bull sophomore Chris Ettesvold then gave the visitors their only lead of the meet, pinning Wyatt Tungland as the buzzer sounded to end the first period of the 120-pound match.

The Bucs were able to take the lead back though in the next match, with Camden Bowers winning at 126 pounds by forfeit.

Alec Huber then continued the Bucs' roll with a pin in the final minute of the 132-pound match.

Huber held a 12-5 lead going into the third period against Christopher Krenz, but 54 seconds later the match ended when the Buc senior pinned the Red Bull sophomore to go ahead 18-9.

Stelter then added to the Bucs' lead, but again the Red Bulls tried to respond.

"Stelter had a nice pin for us at 138, that was a big one at the time for points and to stop their momentum," said Wirtjes. "I thought that all of our wrestlers did a great job tonight though."

The Red Bulls' Elijah Gronewold scored nine points in the final period and overcame a 3-2 deficit to beat Mike Ankeny at 145.

Ankeny took down Gronewold in the first period to go ahead 2-0, before escaping from the down position in the second to take a 3-0 lead.

Gronewold finally got on the board late in the second period with a takedown to get within one, before swinging the momentum in his favor in the final two minutes.

The Red Bull victory cut the Bucs lead in the meet in half, making it 24-12.

Weber then was able to hold off Luke Schavey at 152 pounds and grab another Red Bull victory to close within nine points of the Bucs in the meet.

Weber took a 5-0 lead through two periods, taking down Schavey twice and escaping the Buc wrestler's hold.

In the third period though, Schavey made a late surge, twisting away from Weber for an escape before recording a penalty point to make it 5-2.

The Red Bull senior would hold off Schavey to claim the win and made it 24-15.

That was as close as the Red Bulls would get for the remainder of the match.

Gus Phillips held off Tanner Lange for an 8-7 decision at 160 pounds, before Class A, No. 8-ranked 170-pounder David Franta pinned Harley Luhmann for the Bucs at 170 pounds.

Franta nearly pinned Luhmann early in the first period, taking the Red Bull senior down and then just missing the pin for a three-point near fall.

The Buc senior then needed just 13 seconds in the second period to finish the job, giving BEA back its big lead at 33-15.

Kolt Gorg recorded another of the Bucs' six pins at 182 pounds, needing just 3:34 to down Phillip Bowie.

Jacob Johnson then followed Gorg with an upset 7-6 victory over Red Bull senior Kory Brown in the 195-pound match.

Brown had a 4-2 edge after two periods in the match, but Johnson tore out of Brown's grasp in the third for an escape to make it 4-3.

Johnson then drove Brown to the mat and nearly pinned him, recording two points for a near fall and the 7-4 lead.

As the buzzer sounded, Brown flipped around and earned two points for a reversal, but Johnson had taken home the one-point win to make it 42-15 in the Bucs favor.

"That match (195) was a big big win for Johnson," said Wirtjes. "He works hard in practice and does was he needs to, so for him to get that big win was great."

Luis Figueroa managed the last Red Bull win of the match, beating Jared Armon 10-4 at 220 pounds, before Class A, No. 5-ranked 285 pounder Martin Granados finished the meet with a pin of Adrian Moscoffian at 4:54 for the Bucs.

Fairmont/Martin County West plays host to River Valley and St. Peter in triangular wrestling action at 5 p.m. on Thursday in Sherburn.

Blue Earth Area plays host to Waseca in a South Central Conference dual at 7 p.m. Thursday in Blue Earth.
