TRIMONT - Martin County West opened its season with a win, beating Blue Earth Area 59-41 in nonconference boys basketball action on Tuesday night in Trimont.
Senior Cordell Weber paced the Maverick offense with 17 points and added three steals.
Jake Faber netted 12 points, pulled down seven rebounds and doled out three assists for Martin County West, while teammate Alex Biehn scored nine points and snagged five steals.
Martin County West sank 22 of 48 from the field, including 6-for-18 from behind the arc. The Mavericks also made 9 of 17 from the charity stripe.
Blue Earth Area senior Luke Monson and junior Derek Johnson paced the Bucs by scoring 12 points each.
The Bucs, who made 16 of 36 from the floor, also swished six 3s.
Martin County West (1-0) travels to Madelia for a Valley Conference game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Blue Earth Area (0-1) hosts St. James in a South Central Conference game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
North Union 42, North Iowa 39 - After trailing most of the game, the Warriors assembled a fourth-quarter surgei to sneak by the Bison 42-39 in nonconference basketball action on Tuesday night in Buffalo Center, Iowa.
Sarah Rolling paced the Warriors with nine points, six rebounds and three steals in the win.
Peyton Oleson produced eight points and three steals for the Warriors, Aurora Oliver snagged four boards and three steals, while Madison Bollig doled out four assists.
The Warriors made 14 of 41 shots from the floor, including 12 of 30 from 2-point range. North Union shot 60 percent from the free throw line, making 12 of 20 attempts.
North Union (2-0) plays host to Garner-Hayfield/Ventura at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Armstrong.
