FAIRMONT - Funeral service for Robert D. McMurtry, 88, of Fairmont will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at St. John's United Church of Christ in Fairmont. Burial with full military honors by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and the Martin Co. V.F.W. Post 1222 will follow at Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and will continue one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.

Robert passed away peacefully in his sleep Saturday morning, Aug. 24, 2013, at St. Luke's Lutheran Care Center in Blue Earth.

Robert D. McMurtry was born on June 4, 1925, in Ceylon, Minn., the son of William R. and Elinore (Hein) McMurtry. He attended District 64 country school and then attended Ceylon High School. Bob then entered the U.S. Army in 1946 and served in Japan until his honorable discharge in June of 1947. On June 25, 1950, he was united in marriage to Yvonne "Bonnie" Danielson. They lived near Dolliver from 1950-1954, and then lived in rural Martin County from 1954-1959. In 1959, they built a house in Fairmont and raised their family of 11 kids.

Bob farmed with his father and on his own until 1958. In 1958, he worked for Iowa Road Builders before driving a cement truck for C.H. Gould from 1959-1965. Bob also worked at Stokely'sArmoursConAgra from 1962 until his retirement and when the plant closed in May of 1987. From 1987 until 2012, Bob and Bonnie enjoyed 25 years wintering in Mesa, Ariz.

Bob was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Fairmont and a life member of the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and the Martin Co. V.F.W. Post 1222. Bob enjoyed playing pool, bowling, fishing and making wood crafts. He also enjoyed watching his grandkids at their sporting events and watching his Minnesota Twins.

Those who will cherish his memory include his wife, Yvonne "Bonnie" McMurtry of Fairmont; 11 children, Vicki (Gene) Boeckman of Elmore, Carla (Gary) Moore of Fairmont, Wanda (Keith) Waterbury of Fairmont, Jill Jensen of Northrop, Gary McMurtry of Fairmont, Karen (George) Dollen of Fairmont, Jeff McMurtry of Mesa, Ariz., Steven (Donna) McMurtry of Fairmont, Lyn (Deb) McMurtry of Plant City, Fla., Keith (Joy) McMurtry of Pebble Beach, Calif., Dannette McMurtry (Mike Breazile) of Columbia Heights, Minn.; 22 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild; half-sister, Evie Miller; half-brother, Duane (Dee) McMurtry; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Ashley Waterbury; sister, Carol Howell and her husband, Leonard; half-brother, James McMurtry; and brother-in-law, Bill Miller.

Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer's Association, American Cancer Society, St. John's United Church of Christ or donor's choice.
