Truly a great get-together

The Martin County Fair earns our praise again for being the area's major annual attraction. Thousands visit the fair for a variety of reasons. It is the experience as a whole that makes the fair great.

We congratulate fair board members and all the volunteers who put in countless hours to make the fair a special place for locals and visitors from around the region.

We encourage those who may not have had the chance to visit the fair to check it out today or Sunday.

Program working well

Martin County's summer internship program has become a successful way for a group of 20 students or so get real-world experience or even land a job.

The program is a joint venture of South Central Work Force Center, Minnesota Valley Action Council and Martin County. A main goal is for youth to see what career opportunities are available here, in Martin County, where they grew up.

Feedback from participants has been positive, and we wish the program continued luck.

Good new direction

Fairmont's airport advisory board this week began to formalize a shift in the way the facility is operated. It is encouraging to see the change.

For a long time, the city has hired a contractor to operate and maintain the airport.?In recent years, the city and pilots who use the facility found this arrangement less than satisfactory. Now the city is proposing to treat the airport just like another city department, hiring a manager. This should help ensure greater accountability. The City Council will consider the plan in coming weeks.

Speak up on projects

Fairmont's City Council has begun work on its 2014 budget, which includes liquor store revenue slated to be used for several public projects. These include park and rec improvements, a dog park, removing blighted homes and a citywide cleanup and improving the Birds Bridge channel.

The city must approve a preliminary budget and levy in September, so we hope citizens are making contact with their council members to let them know their preferences and concerns about projects.
