FAIRMONT - The Region 13C No. 1-seeded Fairmont Martins amateur baseball team got a four-hit shutout pitching outing from Shaun McGuire and downed the No. 8-seeded Minneota Mudhens 7-0 on Wednesday at Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont.

"I thought our defense really played well. I was just trying to throw strikes that they would hit and they made the plays for me," said McGuire.

McGuire held the Mudhens to just two hits through the first 8 2/3 innings, keeping Minneota off the scoreboard, and finished the game with 12 strikeouts to earn the Game 1 victory in the best-of-three series opener.

"Shaun is the best pitcher we've got and one of the best in the area," said Fairmont Martins head coach Adam Schmidt. "He was hitting his spots tonight and doing a good job for us and pitching his best at playoff time, right when we need him to."

Fairmont (20-3) will travel for the second game of the series against the Mudhens (8-20) at 7:30 p.m. Friday night in Minneota.

With McGuire dominating on the mound, the Martins managed some offense in the second to stake a 5-0 lead.

Max Waletich delivered a leadoff hit up the middle in the second inning before Levi Becker sailed a single to right to put runners on first and second base.

Logan Peymann took a walk to load the bases before Ian Bents, who went 2-for-3 from the plate, also took a free pass to first to score Waletich.

With the bases still loaded, Jon Ellis, who led the Martins at the plate by going 2-for-4, drove a deep shot to centerfield to clear the bases.

Scott Chirpich then scored Ellis for the final run of the inning with his lone hit of the game to right.

"Offensively, we had one good inning," said Schmidt. "We were able to hold them off defensively, but we had some chances to score that we should have used. But we got the 1-0 lead in the series and that's a good start."

McGuire provided some offense for his cause in the seventh, driving a double to the center-field fence to lead off.

Becker, who finished 2-for-4, then took a walk to put runners on first and second before Schmidt delivered an RBI single to score McGuire.

Bents scored the final Martins' run of the game in the eighth thanks to Andy Reiter's pinch-hit single.

After Bents reached on an error, Tanner Nawrocki lined a hit to left.

With a pair of runners on, Reiter delivered a single to right, wheeling Bents to the plate for the 7-0 win.

Waletich and Nawrocki went 2-for-4 from the dish to add to the Martins' potent offensive effort.

Danny Henner pitched the first four innings for the Mudhens, allowing five runs on seven hits, striking out three and walking two to absorb the loss.

Pat Boggoss pitched three innings of relief, allowing one run on six hits and striking out one, before Matt Musser pitched the final inning and allowed one hit and struck out two.
