For Otto and Lena (Lintelman) Cordes, Nov. 11, 1918, was a day of double blessings. Worldwide, it was the day of the Armistice, but in Fairmont, Minn., Lena gave birth to a daughter, Gladys. The family, including older brothers, Harold and Ervin, lived on a farm near Odin, Minn. Gladys attended a country school near her home and graduated from high school in Fairmont, Minn., in 1937. Always musical, she learned to play piano and sang in chorus and choirs. She was part of the Martin County Farm Bureau Chorus, which sang in the Twin Cities over the major Minnesota radio station of the time, WCCO. Her musical ability became a long-time service to her Lord and to Trinity Lutheran Church in Trimont, Minn., as she became pianist and organist at the church. The service lasted 42 years, nearly every Sunday, along with weddings and funerals. Along the way she added choir director skills for both children and adult choirs at Trinity. She married Nobel Nelson on June 16, 1940, at Trinity Lutheran Church and after the wedding they took the first big trip of their lives, visiting the Black Hills, Bighorns, Yellowstone, and Great Salt Lake. They returned to the Nelson family farm near Trimont. A couple of years later their first son, David was born. In 1948, a second son, Merlin, became part of the family. After Merlin graduated from high school, Gladys took her first off-farm job at Trimont Nursing Home. It was a good fit as activities director mixed her musical skills and sensitivity for people. That lasted until 1985. Meanwhile, she and Nobel retired from the farm and moved to town (Trimont). The boys married: David to Laila in 1964 and Merlin to Linda in 1970. With their sons' careers leading them to Arizona and Montana, Nobel and Gladys made many trips to visit the extended family. Her husband, Nobel died on Jan. 1, 1988.

Gladys is survived by her two sons, David and his wife, Laila of Billings, Mont., and Merlin and his wife, Linda of Bozeman, Mont.; grandchildren, Mark, Wendy (Kelly) Eby, Brenda (Jason) Hofer, and Eric (Rena) Nelson; and great-granddaughter, Kristi; brother, Harold Cordes of Fairmont, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Nobel Nelson; brother, Ervin Cordes; sisters-in-law, Iantha Cordes and Emma Cordes; and other relatives.
