Warriors post wins on both diamonds

SPENCER, Iowa - The North Union Warriors climbed one spot in the Iowa Class 2A softball rankings on Wednesday, but still kept their winning edge on the road on Thursday night.

Dena Looft and Collete Haag connected for pivotal home runs to engineer the No. 2-ranked Warriors to a 8-2 nonconference triumph over the Spencer Tigers in Spencer, Iowa.

Ahead 1-0, Looft cranked a key three-run round-tripper to extend undefeated North Union's edge on the scoreboard to four runs.

Cheyanne Boland later smacked a two-run double to widen the Warriors' advantage to 6-0 before Haag drilled a two-run clout over the fence for an 8-0 edge.

North Union right-hander Peyton Oleson allowed two runs on nine hits in seven innings of work to earn the complete-game victory.

Cassidy Fox and Piper Swanson each produced two hits to top Spencer's effort, with Swanson delivering one RBI.

Tiger starting pitcher Taylor Anderson gave up eight runs on 14 hits, struck out seven and issued two walks in seven innings of work to absorb the loss.

North Union (14-0) competes in the Fort Dodge Invitational today.

North Union 7, Okoboji 1 - The Warriors' Colin Runksmeier threw seven innings, allowing one run on six hits, striking out five and walking two to take the 7-1 victory over the Pioneers in non-league baseball action on Thursday in Okoboji.

Runksmeier also provided some offense to help his own cause, going 2-for-4, including an RBI double to pace the Warriors.

Garrett Johnson drilled a solo home run, going 1-for-3 in the game, while Sawyer Doocy went 1-for-2 with a two-run double.

Holt Hunziker went 2-for-3 to lead the Pioneers, scoring the home team's lone run of the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Matt Eckard pitched five innings, giving up four runs - three earned - on four hits, striking out five and walking four to take the loss.

Keaton Jones pitched the final two innings in relief, giving up three runs on three hits.

North Union hosts Estherville-Lincoln Central and Spirit Lake today in Bancroft.
