MANKATO - Martin County West junior Cordell Weber will have the chance to defend his 2012 Class A individual state golf title.

Weber, who shot a 4-over par round of 76 on Monday at the North Links Golf Course in Mankato, finished second overall and will advance to the Class A state meet next Tuesday at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker.

The United South Central Rebels swept the team portion of the meet, winning the girls title with a score of 381, while the boys won with a score of 323.

Madelia's Jordan Henry netted top individual honors with a score of 37-36-73 for the boys' field, while Sleepy Eye's Emily Curtis carded a 44-43-87 to top the girls.

Weber's second-place total led the Maverick boys, who finished with a team score of 358, to fourth place.

"I think overall we could have played a little better. We got ourselves into some trouble and made some errors that cost us two, three and sometimes four strokes," said Martin County West head coach Jeff Ross. "I think the kids knew that they could've played a little better, but they did the best they could and that's all you can ask."

The Maverick girls also finished fourth as a team, scoring a 429.

After paring his way through the front nine, Weber was able to card an elusive birdie on the par-4, No. 10 to open the back nine.

Weber then proceeded to sink four pars in the final nine holes to clinch his third state meet bid in three years.

"I thought that Cordell was doing a good job of hitting shots and setting himself up on the greens all day. The putts just weren't falling on the front nine, and he finally got a birdie on 10," said Ross. "But now we've got time before state and he won it last year, so we're just going to go up there and see if he can just play and have some fun."

Hunter Olson scored three pars en route to his round of 50-43-93 for the Mavericks, while Connor Anderson, who netted five pars, scored a 49-45-94.

Jacob Buntjer had four pars in the opening nine holes, and finished with a pair of pars on the back nine to score a 46-49-95 to complete the Mavericks' counting marks.

Tyson Crosby and Hunter Schofield rounded out Martin County West's efforts with rounds of 49-50-99 and 54-53-107, respectively.

Michael Dallager scored six pars, including four in the final nine holes during his round of 42-43-85 as Granada-Huntley-East Chain's lone golfer.

On the girls' side, Jennifer Petersen parred Nos. 14, 15 and 16 to complete the Mavericks' low-score round of 55-46-101, just one stroke from a playoff for the final state-qualifying spot.

Kelci Russenberger likewise parred the Nos. 15 and 16 during her round of 54-50-104 for the Mavericks.

Morgan Larson had one par - on the par-3, No. 3 - in a round of 53-56-109.

KaLeigh Russenberger completed Martin County West's team score with a round of 56-59-115, which included one par and a birdie on the par-3, No. 8.

Taylor DeVary rounded out the Mavericks' efforts with one par on the par-3, No. 12 for a 69-63-132.

The Class A boys state meet tees off at 7:30 a.m. next Tuesday at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker.
