GRANADA - Mass of Christian burial for Joseph J. Svoboda, 88, of Granada, Minn., will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Fairmont.
Joe passed away Wednesday afternoon, May 8, 2013, at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Iowa.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, May 10, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, and one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Saturday. There also will be a prayer service 7 p.m. Friday, May 10, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont.
Joseph Jerome Svoboda was born May 13, 1924, in Jackson, Minn., the son of Frank and Anna (Timko) Svoboda. He grew up on a farm near Jackson and helped his dad with all the farming duties. He served a couple of years with the Minnesota National Guard and worked various jobs around the area. On May 22, 1957, Joe was united in marriage to Marjorie Mundy in Spirit Lake, Iowa. They made their home on a farm near Jackson, Minn., where they farmed for two years before moving to a farm between Fairmont and Granada. Joe and Marge raised five sons: Ray, Ron, Tom, Pat and Paul. Joe worked at Fairmont Railway Motors for 20+ years. Marge passed away March 2, 2009. Farming was Joe's passion and he loved to help others out with their field work. He also enjoyed attending local threshing bees. Joe was an avid Minnesota Twins fan and spent a lot of time woodworking. Joe was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont and the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by four sons, Ray Svoboda and his wife Barb of Ankeny, Iowa, Ron Svoboda, Pat Svoboda and Paul Svoboda, all of Granada, Minn.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Helen Garry of Granada, Minn., and Geneva Sauter of Mesa, Ariz.; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Joe was preceded in death by one son, Tom Svoboda; nine brothers and sisters, Mary Rabbe, Julia Svoboda, Josephine Svoboda, Ann Svoboda, Lillian Svoboda, Lorraine Phair, Jack Svoboda, Lawrence Svoboda and Frank Svoboda.
