FAIRMONT - The Spirit Lake Indians did not have any trouble making the transition from the Iowa prep tennis ranks' nine-point format at the Cardinal Courts on Tuesday.

Spirit Lake swept the doubles bracket to help pace a 4-3 victory over the youthful Fairmont Cardinals during a nonconference dual meet in Fairmont.

"We're used to playing six singles matches and then having our singles players also play in the doubles bracket," Spirit Lake head coach Dan Taylor said.

The Indians' doubles tandems, however, did not need any assistance from the singles division, netting three straight-set victories to pack scoring punch during the borderline battle.

Andrew Ites and Trystan Wiedow combined for a 6-1, 6-0 victory over the Cardinals' Andrew Johnson and J.T. Viesselman at the No. 1 position, while Indians' teammates Ryley Smith and Michael O'Brien posted a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Ryan Busche and Carter Klanderud at No. 2 doubles.

Spirit Lake then parlayed No. 1 singles player Brandon Stoll's triumph with a win from the No. 3 doubles combination of Tyler Schmitz and Will Fuelberth into a team triumph.

"They're an older and more experienced team than we are, but we're coming along," Fairmont head coach Eric Johnson said. "Tyler (Head) and Austin (Becker) played steady matches for us today, and Sterlin also came through with a good win."

Head, an up-and-coming eighth-grader, earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Spirit Lake freshman Hunter Andreason at third singles, while Austin Becker - a freshman - served a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Indians' senior Cody Norton at No. 4 singles.

After splitting the first two sets - 7-6 (7-5) and 2-6, respectively - with senior opponent C.J. Kent at No. 2 singles, Fairmont sophomore Sterlin Johnson rallied from a 5-4 deficit in the third set to capture a 7-5 victory.

Stoll posted back-to-back 6-3 set victories over the Cardinals' Grant Becker at No. 1 singles, while Spirit Lake's Schmitz and Fuelberth defeated Mitch Anderton and Jake Kallenbach at No. 3 doubles, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

Fairmont (1-1, 1-0 South Central) travels to Waseca next Tuesday.
