Track slate opens at indoor meet

MANKATO - The Fairmont boys and girls track teams combined for 12 first-place finishes, while Blue Earth Area scored six top finishes in the opening meet of the 2013 schedule at the South Central Conference Indoor meet at the Minnesota State University Mankato campus on Friday.

The Fairmont boys team garnered five individual first-place finishes to go along with their two relay victories in its first competition of the season.

Seniors Mark Fruechte and Justin Barnes combined for two of the Cardinals seven first-place finishes. Freuchte claimed first in the 400 with a time of 54.2 seconds, while Barnes (9.7) snuck past Blue Earth Area's Brandyn Olsen (9.8) for the win in the 60-meter high hurdles.

Evan Ward helped the Cardinals sweep the hurdles, winning the 60-meter low hurdles in 9.3 seconds.

Brandon Martin and Kolin Kelly then each grabbed first-place finishes in field events to help lead Fairmont. Martin won the shot put with a throw of 43-feet-2.5 inches, while Kelly vaulted to a tie for first with the Bucs' Olsen at 9 feet in the pole vault.

Derek Edman, Peter Erickson, Payton Schlomann and Zach Brown teamed up for a win in the 4x200 relay, finishing in 1:42.2.

Barnes, Ward, Fruechte and Tim Tow then teamed up for the final win of the day, taking home the 4x400 relay win in 3:44.6.

Thomas Willette eared a second-place finish for the Cardinals in the 200, finishing in 25 seconds.

Sophomore Sierra Schultz and junior Brooklyn Leichtnam led the charge for the Cardinal girls, each nabbing a pair of first-place honors.

Schultz took home the 60-meter high hurdle title with a race of 10 seconds, and grabbed her second top-mark with a leap of 33-feet-8.5 inches in the triple jump. The fleet-footed sophomore also grabbed second place in the long jump behind teammate Paige Bearson with a jump of 15-6.25.

Bearson scored a first-place finish with a leap of 15-7 in the long jump along with a second-place finish in the triple jump, going 32-6.25.

Leichtnam meanwhile, scored the 60-meter low hurdle honor with a time of 10.7, just ahead of runner-up teammate Emily Wegener (10.8). Leichtnam then vaulted her way to a first-place finish in the pole vault with a height of 7-6.

Tracy Thiesse netted runners-up honors with a jump of 4-10 in the high jump competition for Fairmont.

Sarah Ostlie scored a second-place finish for Fairmont in the 400, racing in at 1:11.4.

Schultz, Thiesse, Ashten Astzenhoefer and Sasha Riley then combined for a second-place finish in the 4x200 relay, coming in at 1:58.1

The Blue Earth Area girls won all but one of the relay races on Friday for three of the team's four first-place finishes.

Skylee Bell claimed the lone individual title, winning the 60-meter dash in 8.2 seconds.

Bell then teamed up with Taylor Grandgenett, Anne Franta and Karli Olsen to win the 4x200 relay in 1:54.2.

Grandgenett, Franta, Olsen and Krista Hassing then took the 4x400 victory in 4:48. The third relay to claim first was the Bucs' distance medley relay, with Paige Darrington, Miranda Johnson, Shayna Stevermer and Hassing motoring to a 4:30.1 finish.

Grandgenett also earned a second-place finish in the 60-meter high hurdles in 10.1 seconds.

Nick Beattie grabbed one of the two Blue Earth Area boys' crowns, winning the 60-meter dash in 7.2 seconds.

Olsen, who tied for first in the pole vault and came in second in the 60-meter high hurdles, also finished second in the 60-meter low hurdles, coming in with a time of 9.8.

The Bucs also managed a second-place time of 1:43.4 in the 4x200, with Taylor Olson, Derek Johnson, Nick Shure and Bailey Olson teaming up for the finish.

Fairmont will again travel to Mankato for a dual meet with United South Central on April 2 at 6 p.m.
