FAIRMONT - Memorial services for Benjamin F. Wenzel, 78, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Burial will be following the service in the Lakeside Cemetery with full military honors by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and the Martin County VFW Post 1222.
Ben passed away Wednesday morning, March 20, 2013, at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today, March 22, 2013, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont.
Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.
Benjamin Franklin Wenzel was born Feb. 23, 1935, in Minnehaha County, rural Sioux Falls, S.D., the son of Benjamin and Viola (King) Wenzel. He received his education in South Dakota. Ben enlisted with the U.S. Air Force and received his honorable discharge. On July 20, 1982, Ben was united in marriage to Marie M. Eckmann in Oklahoma City, Okla. Together, the couple made their home in Oklahoma City. Ben and Marie would later move to Fairmont, Minn., where they enjoyed their retirement. Ben worked for many years with sheet metal in air conditioning and refrigerator repair. He retired in 1985. Ben enjoyed playing cards, listening to music and was always up for a game of pool. He was a life member of the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 in Fairmont.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Marie Wenzel of Fairmont, Minn.; daughters, Debbie Stanley and her husband, Miles, and Kimberly Wenzel; one sister, Loretta Yeske of Worthington, Minn.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Clarence (Patti) Eckmann, Alberta Haskins, Donny Eckmann, Bill (Orra) Eckmann, Ervin (Denise) Eckmann, Melvin Eckmann, and Janet Diekmann as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Ben was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Viola Wenzel; a sister, Phyllis Wenzel; four brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law.
