Four Red Bulls, four Jayhawks reach semis

REDWOOD FALLS - The Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bull wrestlers nabbed four spots in the Section 3AA individual semifinals today in Redwood Falls.

Class AA, No. 1-ranked 106-pounder Trevor Schultz; No. 8-ranked 152-pounder Joe Weber; No. 3-ranked Colton Hines and Kory Brown each grabbed a pair of victories on Friday to remain undefeated in the tournament.

Schultz reached the semifinals in the 106-pound bracket after grabbing a 16-1 technical fall victory over Luverne's Jayden Renken in his first match. Schultz followed that with a pin of Morris Area/Hancock Area/Chokio-Alberta's Matt Munsterman at 2:39 in the quarterfinals.

The Red Bull senior will take on Dawson-Boyd/Lac Qui Parle Valley's Donny Bothun in the 106-pound semifinals today. Bothun earned a 14-10 decision over Montevideo's Christan Kanten in their quarterfinal match.

Weber earned a first-round bye in the 152-pound bracket for the Red Bulls, before pinning Worthington's Joey Mills at 1:07 in the quarterfinals.

The two victories for Weber will pit him against Luverne's Zach Gillette in the semifinals today. Gillette shut out Quad County's Brandon Bratsch, 3-0, in the quarterfinals.

Brown also garnered a first-round bye for the Red Bulls to reach the quarterfinal round of the 195-pound bracket. Brown outlasted Redwood Valley's Brayden Kvistero in a 6-4 decison.

Adam Garms from Adrian Area will take on Brown in their semifinal match, with the winner advancing to the Section 3AA championship match today.

Garms pinned the Parameters' Cole Bungarden at 2:45 in the quarterfinals.

Hines completed the quartet of Red Bull semifinalists, pinning Adrian Area's Quinn Cleveland in 28 seconds during the quarterfinal match of the 285-pound bracket after receiving a first-round bye.

Hines will face off against Marshall's Austin Nath in the semifinals. Nath pinned Luverne's Cody Rofshus at 1:25 in their quarterfinal match.

Red Bulls' seventh-grader Collin Steuber earned his first sectional victory in the 113-pound bracket, defeating the Luverne's Will Natte in a 6-5 decision in the opening round. Steuber then lost a 16-2 major decision to Class AA, No. 10-ranked 113-pounder Colten Specht from Quad County in the quarterfinals.

Steuber will face MAHACA's Mitchell Ascheman in the wrestlebacks today.

FHS/MCW's Elijah Gronewold earned a first-round bye in the 126-pound bracket, advancing to take on Quad County's Zach Kluver in the quarterfinals. Kluver slipped past Gronewold by taking the 5-4 decision to reach the semis.

Gronewold will face the winner of Marshall's Matt Facile and Fulda/Murray County Central's Ben Blanchette's wrestleback match in the second round.

The Red Bulls' Remington Kuehl fell with 9 seconds remaining in his opening-round match of the 132-pound bracket to Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove's Caleb Christian.

Kuehl will square off against the MAHACA's Travis Ostby in the wrestlebacks.

Marshall's Ramzi Gregoire pinned the Red Bulls' Harley Luhmann at 1:57 in the first round of the 138-pound bracket.

Luhmann will wrestle Worthington's Vince Riley in the first round of the wrestlebacks today.

Tanner Lange won his opening match of the 145-pound bracket for the Red Bulls, downing the Trojans' King Saenz in a 6-0 decision to reach the quarterfinals.

The Parameters' Keith Abraham outscored Lange 4-2 in their quarterfinal match, sending him to the wrestlebacks.

Lange will take on Redwood Valley's Shawn Edwards in the first round today.

Phillip Bowie claimed a first-round bye for the Red Bulls in the 160-pound bracket, before Class AA, No. 9-ranked Ben Loosbrock pinned him at 1 minute in the quarterfinal match.

Bowie will wrestle the winner of Redwood Valley's Cody Anderson and Quad County's Zach Fischer's first-round wrestleback match in today's second round.

Nathan Gillis managed to pin the Raiders' Dylan Nelson at 1:19 in the opening round of the 170-pound bracket for the Red Bulls to reach the quarterfinals.

MAHACA's Class AA, No. 9-ranked Connor Metzger then pinned Gillis at 1:11 in the quarterfinal match to send the Red Bull to the wrestlebacks.

Gillis will take on Luverne's Brent Thompson in the first-round today.

Adrian's Andy McCann pinned the Red Bulls' Tyler Allen at 3:05 in the opening round of the 182-pound bracket, putting Allen against the Raiders' Shay Postuma in the wrestlebacks today.

After earning a first-round bye for the Red Bulls, Luis Figueroa was pinned by Marshall's Justin Varpness at 2:47 in the 220-pound quarterfinal match.

Figueroa will wrestle Adrian's Tony Sieve in the wrestlebacks today.

Section 4A Meet

Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther wrestlers Adam Cooling, Bryon Forstner, Jon Whitney and Jake Denn earned spots in today's Section 4A Individual Meet's semifinals.

Forstner and Whitney each recorded falls during their respective sectional quarterfinal matches on Friday in Le Sueur, Cooling coasted to a technical fall, while Denn did not allow a point during his winning decision.

Cooling, the No. 1-ranked 160-pounder in the Class A state poll, generated a 19-4 technical fall in 5:15 over St. James' Carlos Marquez.

Cooling (39-0) faces Sibley East's Austin Kube (23-17) in today's 160-pound semifinal in Le Sueur.

Kube edged Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial's Ari Harnitz in quarterfinal action, 1-0.

Forstner, who holds the No. 8 spot in the Class A 132-pound rankings, needed only 41 seconds to pin Trinity School at River Ridge's Colm Maines.

Forstner (29-5) squares off against LCWM's Devan Hagge (19-12) in today's 132-pound semifinal action. Hagge slipped by Norwood Young America's Davis Colley, 5-4, in the quarterfinals.

During 145-pound action, Whitney earned the slap of the canvas in 3:55 over St. Agnes' Anthony Tarnowski.

Whitney (23-12) battles Trinity School at River Ridge's Dietrich Balsbaugh (31-7) in today's 145-pound semifinal action.

Balsbaugh reached the semifinals via a 9-5 decision over St. James' Kody Curry.

Denn rounded out the four Jayhawk semifinalists by posting a 6-0 victory over Windom/Mountain Lake's Gavin Mutz.

Denn (23-16) faces LCWM's Jesse Grunderson (21-11) in 195-pound semifinal action today in Le Sueur. Grunderson pinned St. James' Chris Johnson in 3:21 to remain undefeated in the sectional.

The Jayhawks' Cole Pietsch opened Friday's sectional action by pinning Tommy Wentzlaff of Sibley East in 52 seconds during a first-round match at 106 pounds.

No. 6-ranked Wyatt Stevens of Windom/Mountain Lake then rolled to an 11-0 major decision over Pietsch in the quarterfinals to send MTML's 106-pounder into today's wrestlebacks.

The Jayhawks' Isaac Pfeffer remained alive in the 126-pound wrestlebacks by pinning Dylan Just of NYA in 1:25.

Pfeffer bounced back after losing a 4-0 quarterfinal decision to Bryant Ridgeway of Trinity School at River Ridge.

Both Pfeffer and Pietsch will grapple opponents to be determined in the consolation bracket.

MTML's Jeremiah Colon (113), Justin Gifferson (138), Steve Tierney (170) and Jeremy Blakesley (220) also remain alive in today's 10 a.m. wrestlebacks in Le Sueur.

Sibley East's Mitch Heibel downed Colon, 13-6, during Friday's quarterfinals. Colon then received a wrestleback bye in today's first round and will await an opponent to be determined.

River Valley's Alexis Flores pinned Gifferson in 1:39 in the quarterfinals. Gifferson faces St. James' Tyler Westman in today's wrestlebacks in Le Sueur.

Tierney pinned Trinity School at River Ridge's David Dahl in 3:12 during first-round action before Class A No. 2-ranked Aaron Bates of Sibley East posted a 12-1 major decision over Tierney in quarterfinal action.

Tierney battles Le Sueur-Henderson's Clayton Colling in today's wrestlebacks in Le Sueur.

Sibley East's Miah Dufrane pinned Blakesley in 59 seconds during Friday's quarterfinal match. Blakesley takes on St. Agnes' Malik Johnson today in wrestleback action.

Unfortunately for the Jayhawks, Jesus Lopez was eliminated from the sectional competition on Friday.

NYA's Caleb Wickenhauser pinned Lopez in 1:32 during first-round 152-pound action.

St. James' Zack Gleiter then pinned Lopez in 1:56 in second-round wrestleback action on Friday to end the Jayhawks' tournament.
