Fairmont Sentinel

NEW RICHLAND - Class A, No. 1-ranked 170-pounder Darick Vancura delivered the meet-winning points during Saturday's Section 2A team wrestling championship in New Richland.

Vancura earned the slap of the canvas to cap defending Class A state champion and No. 1-ranked Jackson County Central's string of four consecutive falls from 145 to 170 pounds to build a insurmountable 37-12 lead over United South Central.

Tanner Menke (195) and heavyweight Nathaniel Horn later added falls to seal the Huskies' 49-19 triumph over the Rebels and earn a return trip to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

JCC opens the Class A team state quarterfinals at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, against an opponent to be determined.

After No. 8-ranked 138-pounder Derek Herman posted a 10-5 victory to inch USC within one point in the team scoring, No. 2-ranked 145-pounder Paden Moore triggered JCC's run of four falls in a row.

Paden Moore needed only 39 seconds to pin Matt Harpestad at 145 before No. 1-ranked 152-pounder Luke Norland pressed Seth Olson's shoulders to the mat in 1:15 to quickly widen the Huskies' lead to 25-12.

No. 3-ranked 160-pounder Keegan Moore then pinned Cory Ehlert in just 36 seconds to extend the gap to 31-12 before Vancura needed only 25 seconds to down Travis Brown at 170.

In one of the sectional finale's marquee matches, JCC's No. 1-ranked Eliot Jurries doubled the score on No. 4-ranked Dylan Herman of USC, 10-5, during 132-pound action.

No. 4-ranked 106-pounder Dominic Alger of USC pinned Dalton Wagner in 1:49 during the dual meet's opening match, while unranked Jacob Gonsalez of the Rebels upended No. 6-ranked Jordan Biehn, 7-2, during the 120-pound match.

No. 7-ranked 182-pounder Colton Carlson of USC produced a 12-4 major decision over Nate Guggisberg to round out the top-ranked wrestlers' efforts during the sectional finals.

USC 39, Blue Earth Area 36 - Colton Carlson delivered the pivotal points via a fall during 170-pound action to help the Rebels fend off the Bucs' incredible late comeback during sectional semifinal team action Saturday in New Richland.

USC generated five falls to open the dual meet with six straight victories to build a 33-0 lead before Blue Earth Area's Luke Schavey triggered his lineup's reversal of points.

Schavey pinned Matt Harpestad in 1:54 at 145 before Buc teammate Kolt Gorg downed Cory Ehlert in 1:15 at 152 to slice the Rebels' lead to 33-12.

David Franta posted a 9-1 major decision over Seth Olson at 160 before Class A, No. 5-ranked 160-pounder Carter Hanson moved up a weight to amass a 17-1 technical fall victory over Travis Brown at 170.

Carlson, who holds the No. 7 spot at 182, halted the Bucs' run by pinning Gus Phillips in 3:38 to put the Rebels ahead 39-21.

No. 4-ranked 195-pounder Kysten Zierke followed with a 10-4 decision over Logan Sonnek for Blue Earth Area before teammates Micah Twedt (220) and No. 8-ranked heavyweight Martin Granados delivered falls in 3:45 and 59 seconds, respectively.
