Mustangs, Mavericks net wins in Showcase

CLEVELAND - Freshman center Rachel Shumski produced a game-high double-double performance of 24 points and 10 rebounds to help the Granada-Huntley-East Chain Mustangs stampede to a 70-43 Valley Conference Showcase basketball victory over the Cleveland Clippers on Thursday night in Cleveland.

Shumski also garnered four steals, while teammate Amanda Cegelske neared double-double territory by collecting 10 points and eight rebounds to complement six assists.

Anna Balcom contributed 12 points and four steals to GHEC's winning ways, while Mariah Jensen distributed three assists.

The Mustangs scorched the nets on 33 of 56 field goals for 59 percent, in addition to hitting 4 of 11 free throws on the game.

Taylor Holicky scored 17 points to top the Clippers, while teammate Kylie Krause chipped in 10 points.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain (12-6) plays Martin Luther at 4 p.m. Saturday in Showcase action in Cleveland, while the host Clippers face St. Clair at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Martin County West 47, Alden-Conger 42 - Kate Thiesse netted a double-double effort of 16 points and 12 rebounds to help power the Mavericks to a five-point Showcase victory over the Knights on Thursday night in Alden.

Thiesse also pocketed four steals and doled out three assists, while teammates Madyson Larson and Taryn Tumbleson each garnered three steals.

The Mavericks connected on 19 of 43 field goals and 9 of 19 free throws on the game.

Taylor Martin scored 14 points to top Alden-Conger, while Brittany Waters generated 11 points.

Martin County West (19-2) faces Mankato Loyola at 8 p.m. Saturday in Showcase action in Cleveland.

St. Clair 55, Martin Luther 41 - The Cyclones outscored the Knights 28-20 in the second half to pace a 14-point Showcase victory on Thursday night in St. Clair.

Effie Bentz scored nine points and pulled down five rebounds to top Martin Luther, while Kayley Shoen also netted nine points.

Amber Schulz neared double-double territory by scoring eight points to go with 11 rebounds for the Knights, Kristi Oberdieck chalked up eight points and seven rebounds, while Hunter Payne chipped in seven points and three assists.

The Knights made 11 of 47 shots from 2-point range, 0 of 4 from 3-point distance and 19 of 26 from the line.

Martin Luther (11-11) plays Granada-Huntley-East Chain at 4 p.m. Saturday in Showcase action in Cleveland.

Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 59, Truman 41 - Megan Schroeder scored 17 points to help guide the Knights to an 18-point Showcase victory over the Bluejays on Thursday night in Lake Crystal.

Rachel Sonnabend netted 13 points, while Ashlie Wiens added 10 points for LCWM, which made 19 of 34 free throws on the game.

Brooke McDonald scored a game-leading 19 points to complement seven boards for Truman, while teammate Briannia Pearson supplied 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Bluejays made 6 of 13 free throws on the night.

Truman (3-20) faces Madelia at 10 a.m. Saturday in Showcase action in Cleveland, while Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial (6-16) plays Maple River at noon Saturday.

New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva 54, Blue Earth Area 17 - Carlie Wagner poured in a game-leading 27 points to go with four assists to steer the Class 2A, No. 2-ranked Panthers to a 54-17 non-league victory over the Bucs on Thursday night in New Richland.

Maddie Wagner contributed 10 points to NRHEG's winning ways, while teammate Jade Schultz supplied five points, 11 rebounds, six steals and six assists.

The Panthers made 15 of 27 shots from 2-point range, 6 of 17 from behind the bonus arc and 6 of 9 at the line.

Krista Hassing delivered six points and four rebounds for Blue Earth Area, while teammate Taylor Grandgenett supplied six points.

The Bucs hit only 3 of 25 shots from 2-point distance, 0 of 7 from 3-point range and 11 of 16 at the charity stripe.

Blue Earth Area (11-6, 4-3 South Central) plays host to St. James tonight, while New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva (20-1) hits the road to Randolph tonight.
