No. 6 FHS boys, Cardinal girls sweep Arrows

PIPESTONE - Eight straight and six out of the last eight.

The Class 2A, No. 6-ranked Fairmont boys basketball lineup extended its undefeated string to eight in a row during varsity doubleheader basketball action Saturday, while the Cardinals' girls basketball team continued its stellar streak by claiming its sixth victory over the past eight outings.

Forward Levi Becker connected on four 3-pointers to highlight a 16-point first-half performance en route to a game-high 21 points to power the Cardinals to a 64-54 non-league triumph over the Pipestone Arrows in Pipestone.

Guard Mitch Pfingsten proved a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line during the second half to finish with 18 points for Fairmont. Pfingsten's prowess paced the Cardinals' 14 of 15 second-half performance at the stripe en route to a 17-for-21 effort on the game.

Forward Jay Ruen collected 10 points and five rebounds for Fairmont, Pfingsten also pulled down a team-best six rebounds, Josh Eversman garnered four boards, while Ryan Noll distributed three assists.

The Cardinals made 13 of 30 shots from 2-point range and 7 of 18 from behind the bonus arc on the game.

In girls' action, power forward Alex Christianson produced a game-leading double-double performance to power Fairmont to a 54-47 triumph over Pipestone on Saturday in Pipestone.

Christianson collected 19 points and 11 rebounds to complement four steals, while guard Sierra Schultz contributed 12 points, five rebounds and four assists to the winning effort.

Center Kayla Lardy tallied nine points and six rebounds for the Cardinals, while guard Kristen Campe supplied nine points.

Fairmont connected on 20 of 35 shots from 2-point range for 57 percent, hit 1 of 4 shots from 3-point distance and sank 11 of 19 at the free throw line.

The Fairmont boys team (15-3, 6-0 South Central) resumes conference action by traveling to New Ulm on Friday night.

The Fairmont girls lineup (8-11, 3-4 SCC) plays host to New Ulm on Friday night at Cardinal Gym in a conference game.

The Arrows snuck past the Cardinal girls 34-30 in B-squad basketball action on Saturday in Pipestone.

Fairmont's Cassidy Krusemark neared double-double territory, scoring 12 points and grabbing nine boards to lead the Cardinal scoring efforts, while Sophie Shelgren added six points.

Fairmont's B-squad will host New Ulm in a 6 p.m. game on Friday at Cardinal Gym.
