Saints pin loss on Red Bulls

FAIRMONT - Fairmont/Martin County West's trio of state-ranked wrestlers prevented St. James from running the gamut during Thursday night's South Central Conference dual meet at Cardinal Gym in Fairmont.

The visiting Saints combined falls from Class A, No. 6-ranked 113-pounder Cody Hanson, Ryan Westman (170), Chris Johnson (182) and Devin Wolle (195) into a 48-12 team triumph over the Red Bulls.

"We knew they have three guys who are ranked (in the Guillotine poll), and you never are quite sure how the weight classes will match up," St. James mentor Gene Hildebrandt said. "We wanted to see how the two (ranked) big guys would do against one another tonight."

Red Bulls' heavyweight Colton Hines - who holds the No. 3 spot in the Class AA rankings - and the Saints' Victor Torres - the No. 6-ranked 285-pounder in Class A - went toe-to-toe during the final match of the SCC dual.

The two titans battled to a scoreless opening 2-minute segment before Hines managed a second-period escape for a narrow 1-0 lead heading into the third frame.

Torres wasted little time in breaking free from the down position to open the final period to knot the score at 1-all. Torres shot low for a takedown with time winding down and Hines countered for the two-point takedown. Hines then cut Torres loose with 3 seconds remaining to earn the hard-fought 3-2 decision.

"Any win over a ranked opponent is a quality win," Red Bulls mentor Jake Tietje said in reference to Hines' victory.

Class AA, No. 1-ranked 106-pounder Trevor Schultz and No. 9-ranked 152-pounder Joe Weber produced the other nine team points for FHS/MCW.

Schultz built a 7-1 lead over Jose Garcia during 120-pound action before earning the referee's slap of the canvas in 3:47.

A maskless Weber, who donned protective head gear for a broken nose earlier this season, battled through a bloody nose to garner a hard-fought 2-1 decision over Zack Gleiter at 152.

Weber and Gleiter grappled to a scoreless first frame before Weber utilized a quick hip spin maneuver to merit a reversal only 15 seconds into the second period.

Despite three more short stoppages due to the bloody nose, Weber allowed only a third-period escape to Gleiter to capture the 2-1 final decision.

The Saints offset the Red Bulls' talented trio as the highly-ranked Hanson needed only 1:12 to pin Chris Ettesvold at 113, while Westman pressed Phillip Bowie's shoulders to the mat in 17 seconds at 170.

Chris Johnson and FHS/MCW's Nathan Gillis - a pair of skilled freshmen - battled to a 5-4 opening period, with Gillis ahead on the scoreboard. The two 182-pounders battled to a scoreless middle segment before an illegal hold called against Johnson and Johnson's ensuing reversal knotted the match at 6-all. Johnson, however, managed to pin the hard-working Gillis with only 7 seconds remaining.

Wolle added a fall in 3:05 over an injury-hindered Kory Brown during 195-pound action.
