FAIRMONT - Fairmont Area eighth-grader Cori Emler netted her first varsity goal as the Cardinals girls hockey team slid past the Worthington Trojans 7-1 in a nonconference game on Thursday night at Martin County Arena in Fairmont.

With the Cardinals up 5-1, Jenna Klages sent a shot on net from the point, and Emler was there to slap in the rebound, sending the puck tumbling over Worthington netminder Amanda Bristow's head and just under the cross bar for the goal.

"It was exciting and really nice to see Cori get her first varsity goal tonight," said Fairmont Area head coach Scott Kuhl.

Bristow managed to turn away 47 of the Cardinals' 54 shots on goal, but a four-goal first period gave Fairmont Area the secure lead.

"Their goalie made some good saves tonight, and did well," said Kuhl.

Taylor Nuss netted the first of Fairmont Area's seven goals at 3:33 in the opening period. Nuss poked Tieryn Arens' pass from behind the net past Bristow for the 1-0 lead.

Nuss came back and scored a second goal 2 minutes and 14 seconds later with assists to Abby Rahm and Kelsy Junkermeier.

Arens then got on the scoring train and netted a pair of goals to give the Cardinals a 4-0 lead after one.

Arens blasted a shot from the slot past two defenders for her first goal on an assist from Myah Lytle, before netting her second on a pass from Kelsy Junkermeier with 19 seconds remaining in the first.

Worthington got on the board in the second period with Ashley Thompson sending a Shelby Veen and Betsy Thompson assist into the net to make it 4-1.

Fairmont Area fired back with a pair of lamp lighters, including an unassisted goal from Logyn Cone before Emler's milestone tally.

Brooke Lemon scored a short-handed goal on a one-timer from Lytle with 2:17 left in the second period to solidify the 7-1 victory.
