FAIRMONT - The Luverne Cardinals girls hockey team scored three goals in the first five minutes of the second period, while Madilyn Oye tallied a hat trick along with two assists to help propel the visitors to a 9-2 nonconference victory over the Fairmont Area Cardinals on Tuesday at Martin County Area in Fairmont.

Luverne jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period with a pair of wristers from Morgan Hohn and Oye, who tallied a game-high five points.

The hometown Cardinals had an opportunity to score late in the first when Kelsy Junkermeier snuck a pass to Taylor Nuss, who was charging down the slot, but Luverne netminder Kennedy Gonnerman knocked down the shot to maintain the shutout.

"They beat us 8-1 last time we played them, and 9-2 tonight. They will be the No. 2 seed in the section and they showed why they are a good team tonight," said Fairmont Area head coach Scott Kuhl. "We just aren't there yet."

Kelsy Junkermeier cut the deficit in half with a quick shot 1:13 into the second period. The Fairmont Area freshman sent an Abby Rahm and Lauren Carlson assist sliding under Gonnerman's leg pad, just inside the post to make it 2-1.

Luverne fired back with a goal 50 seconds later when Ellen Dahl scored on an Oye and Makayla Sterrett assist. Madisyn Dingman then found the net on another Oye assist just 28 seconds later to make it 4-1.

Sterrett stole a Fairmont Area pass at the blue line during a Luverne penalty to give the visitors a short-handed scoring opportunity.

Sterrett drove down the slot, with a one-on-one opportunity to score.

Fairmont Area netminder, Miranda O'Connor kicked away the Luverne shot, giving the home team some energy.

Luverne would tally two more goals before the middle period would end, giving it a five-goal lead going into the final period.

A quick goal from Luverne's Monique Aanenson - 1:20 into the period - gave the visitors a 7-1 lead.

Fairmont Area freshman Myah Lytle banged home her own rebound on a shot in front of the net to break the Luverne scoring streak at 7-2.

Sterrett scored her lone goal of the game with 10:52 left to play, snapping the net for a top-shelf shot to make it 8-2.

Oye's third and final goal came with just over two and a half minutes to play to finalize the 9-2 victory.

O'Connor stopped 30 shots, while Gonnerman blocked 23 of Fairmont Area's 25 shots on net.

"We got more shots off this time, so that is an improvement," said Kuhl. "It has been tough to come back off of a 10-day layoff and play. So that didn't help."
