Cardinal hockey teams fall in tourney action

BLAINE - Junior forward Sarah Lynn tallied back-to-back third-period goals to seal the Minnehaha Saints' 3-0 victory over the Fairmont Area Cardinals during first-round hockey action at the Schwan Cup Tournament on Thursday in Blaine.

Minnehaha (2-10) advances to face International Falls - an 8-0 winner over Marshall - at 4:45 p.m. today in the Green Division's semifinals on Super Rink 8 in Blaine.

Fairmont Area (3-7) faces the Marshall at 12:30 p.m. today in the Green Division's consolation semifinals on Super Rink 5.

Freshman forward Saakje Hoekstra staked the Saints to an early 1-0 lead by converting Katie Jones' assist into the opening period's only goal just 3:26 into the game.

Fairmont Area, which produced a 24-17 shots-on-goal advantage, and Minnehaha battled to a scoreless second period before Lynn registered a pair of unassisted goals at the 9:49 and 16:52 junctures, respectively, during the third frame to cap the Saints' victory.

Sophomore netminder Julia Carle made 24 saves to earn the shutout for Minnehaha.

Fairmont Area goaltender Miranda O'Connor stopped 14 of the Saints' 17 shots on goal.

Boys Hockey

Morris/Benson Area 9, Fairmont Area 2 - The Morris/Benson Area Storm lit the lamp at Koronis Arena early and often during Thursday's consolation semifinal game against the Fairmont Area Cardinals at the River Lakes Holiday Boys Hockey Tournament in Paynesville.

Darion Helberg, Brody Gimberlin and Mac Beyer joined forces to strike like lightning in building an early three-goal edge for the Storm less than 5 minutes into the game en route to a 9-2 triumph over the Cardinals.

Fairmont Area (1-7) faces Mankato East at noon today in the seventh-place game at Koronis Arena. Morris-Benson Area plays Oahe - a 5-2 winner over East - in today's 2:30 p.m. fifth-place game.

Helberg found the Cardinals' net only 2:10 into the opening period before Brody Gimberlin and Beyer combined on a pair of back-to-back shorthanded goals for the Storm. Gimberlin netted an unassisted goal at the 4:19 mark before feeding Beyer for another shorthanded tally only 21 seconds later.

Riley Blake bridged the first and second frames with both of his goals on the game, capping Morris/Benson Area's 4-0 first-period lead with his first netfinder at the 10:28 juncture.

Blake then picked up in the middle segment where he left off during the initial period, converting a double-assist from Corey Goff and Chad Schwarz into a goal at the 1:24 mark.

Tanner Picht scored an unassisted goal to cap the Storm's second-period scoring before delivering an assist to Beyer only 35 seconds into the third frame to extend Morris/Benson Area's lead to 7-0.

Grant Becker spoiled Storm netminder Austin Crow's shutout bid by converting Ben Mitchell's assist into the Cardinals' first goal of the game just 2:18 into the third segment.

Taner Gimberlin chipped in an unassisted goal before combining with Tanner Mikkelson to find Helberg for Morris/Benson Area's final goal.

Matt Lytle cashed in a double-assist from Josh Wills and Kalon Wilson at the 10:46 mark of the third period to close out Fairmont Area's scoring.

Morris/Benson Area outshot Fairmont Area by a 56-14 margin. Cardinal netminder Colton Cunning made an incredible 47 saves, while Crow turned away a dozen shots for the Storm.
