Tigers scratch Cardinals

PAYNESVILLE - The Class A No. 9-ranked Princeton Tigers boys hockey team put on an offensive demonstration in the River Lakes Holiday Tournament, defeating the Fairmont Area Cardinals 17-1 on Wednesday in Paynesville.

Fairmont Area (1-6) faces Benson-Morris in the first round of the consolation bracket in the tournament today at noon in Paynesville.

Princeton (9-1) faces the host River Lakes in the semifinal game of the tournament at 5 p.m. today.

River Lakes defeated Benson-Morris 8-4 in its opening round contest.

The Tigers' Daniel Voce tallied two goals in the first three minutes and 30 seconds on his way to a five-point performance to spur Princeton's relentless offensive attack early in the game.

Brock Johnson came back for the Cardinals with an unassisted goal, cutting the deficit in half at the 6:05 mark of the first period.

Princeton's Dan Muench responded 42 seconds later with his first of three goals to recapture the two-goal lead on an A.J. Wesloh and Collin Buness assist.

Wesloh followed the assist up with a scoring explosion, netting four goals in two minutes and 11 seconds to stake the 7-1 lead after the opening period.

Muench and Wesloh each finished with a game-high six points, with Muench recording three goals and three assists, while Wesloh assisted two goals in addition to his four in the opening frame.

For Fairmont Area, Derrick Hohensee made a season-high 40 saves on 57 Tiger shots on goal.

The Tiger offense picked up where it left off in the second period, lighting the lamp twice in the opening minute to take a 9-1 lead.

Jake Green netted the first goal of the second period on a pass from Voce, 23 seconds in, and was followed up by Muench's second goal of the game just 14 seconds later.

With Princeton's Cam Paulson drawing a high-sticking penalty at the 1:29 in the second, the Tigers still managed to fire shots on goal.

Buness scored his first goal of the game on a short-handed shot at 2:55.

Muench then completed his hat trick in the final 25 seconds of the penalty kill with another shorthanded goal to take the 11-1 lead for the Tigers.

Tyler Leverty, Tommy Schroepfer and Paulson each added to the Tigers' effective offensive attack with goals in the second.

Voce completed his hat trick with his third goal at 5:42 on a Wesloh assist and Buness scored his second of the game on a Muench and Leverty assist.

Princeton's Riley Forland scored an unassisted goal for the Tigers at 5:49 of the third period to finalize the 17-1 victory.

Buness finished with a six-point performance, assisting on four goals along with his two lamp lighters.

Princeton's Max Mattson stopped six of the seven shots he faced.
