Schultz, Cooling win Riots titles

REDWOOD FALLS - Fairmont/Martin County West's Class AA, No. 1-ranked 106-pounder Trevor Schultz claimed a first-place finish in the 113-pound bracket during Saturday's Redwood River Riots to help the Red Bulls to an 11th-place team finish.

Class A, No. 1-ranked 160-pounder Adam Cooling took home the 170 title in the River Riot, helping the Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther Jayhawks to a ninth-place finish.

Schultz's opponents scored just four points in two matches on his way to the championship match.

In the semis, Schultz defeated BOLD's Brady Zitzmann with a technical fall of 17-2 to reach the finals against the Class A, No. 5-ranked Zack Kuhns from Maple River.

Kuhns managed two points, but Schultz held on for the 10-2 major decision victory and championship.

Cooling's route to the crown was a bit more difficult.

In the quarters, Cooling handed New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva's Dillon Parpart an 11-3 loss before defeating Fulda/Murray County Central's Ben Loosbrock 11-4 in the semis.

Those victories pitted Cooling against the Class A, No. 2-ranked Jordon Rothers from Kerkoven-Murdock-Sunburg. Cooling outlasted Rothers for the 4-1 decision and 170-pound title.

Class AA, No. 3-ranked Colton Hines of the Red Bulls had a chance at redemption from a quadruple overtime loss to River Valley's Class A, No. 1-ranked Lance Briard during dual-meet action on Dec. 7.

Hines and Briard faced off in the heavyweight championship on Saturday, with Briard coming out on top with a 3-2 decision.

Hines defeated Marshall's Austin Nath in overtime in the semifinals to face off against Briard in the championship.

The Red Bulls' Joe Weber lost to Class A, No. 4-ranked Zach Carlson in the semifinals of the 152-pound bracket, but went on to win twice to claim third place. After pinning Maple River's Kyle Schoneck in 2:30 in the quarterfinals, Weber lost a 9-3 decision to Carlson in the semis.

Weber rebounded in the consolation bracket though, defeating Canby's Austin Campbell in a 5-4 decision before beating BOLD's Chaz Rousch 3-1 in the third-place match.

Carlson went on to win the 152 title, upsetting the Class A, No. 2-ranked Tanner Rohlik from Wabasso/Red Rock Central in a 6-0 decision.

The Jayhawks earned another top finish with Bryon Forstner placing second in the 132-pound bracket.

Class A, No. 4-ranked Dylan Herman from United South Central claimed first place at 132, pinnning Forstner at 3:25.

Forstner defeated Canby's Billy Deslauriers by technical fall at 3:23 in the prelims, before receiving an injury default victory over Marshall's Riley Roth.

The Jayhawk then shut out Wabasso/Red Rock Central's Derek Christians in a 4-0 decision to reach the finals.

The Jayhawks' Jon Whitney finished fourth in the 145-pound bracket.

Whitney defeated Kerkoven-Murdock-Sunburg's Travis Lamecker in a 7-3 decision before losing to the Class A, No. 7-ranked Aaron Trio from Maple River by an 8-3 decision in the semis.

In the consolation bracket, Whitney went on to defeat NRHEG's Tyler Logan in an 8-2 decision before losing to Minneapolis South's Brandon Strong in the third-place match by a 21-7 major decision.

F/MCW's Collin Steuber and M/T/ML's Cole Pietsch each made it to Saturday's portion of the 106 tournament, but lost their opening matches. Steuber fell to St. James' Mario Garcia in a 6-4 decision, while Pietsch losts a 6-0 decision to Tanner Pasvogel from Sibley East.

F/MCW's Elijah Gronewold won his first consolation match, in the 132 bracket, pinning Alexandria's Jacob Schiltgen in 4:04. Rocori's Cody Buerman held on to defeat Gronewold in his second consolation match, winning a 5-3 decision.

Nathan Gillis, another Red Bull in the 182-pound consolation bracket on Saturday, pinned Alexandria's Andrew Moske in 59 seconds for the first-round victory. Gillis then faced Marshall's Campbell Hofstetter in the second round of the consolation. Hofstetter pinned Gillis at 2:58 to take the win.

Le Sueur-Henderson Class A No. 1-ranked Austin Anderly pinned Class A No. 4-ranked Domonic Alger from United South Central for first-place in the 106 bracket.

Mankato West's Charlie Dundas finished third at 106, defeating Ben Bogart from Alexandria in an 11-6 decision.

Class A No. 6-ranked Cody Hanson took the third-place finish over BOLD's Zitzmann, winning in a 9-1 major decision.

Worthington's Anthony Luft upset the Class A, No. 5-ranked Spencer Jenniges from Wabasso/ Red Rock Central, winning a 13-0 major decision for the first-place finish at 120.

Kerkoven-Murdock-Sunburg's Nick Meyer defeated USC's Jacob Gonsalez in a 6-2 decision for third place in the 120 bracket.

Class A, No. 2-ranked Richard Soto from St. James defeated Maple River's Russell Caldwell 9-3 in the 126 championship on Saturday. Class A, No. 4-ranked Cody Peters from Kerkoven-Murdock-Sunburg finished third, defeating Wabasso/Red Rock Central's Josh Altermatt 6-0.

Litchfield's Tyler Jones upset the Class A, No. 7-ranked Derek Christians from Wabasso/Red Rock Central in the third-place match at 132. Jones defeated Christians, 10-3.

Tri-City United's Class AA, No. 4-ranked Mason Brownlee defeated Sibley East's Hunter Retzlaff via a 12-3 major decision in the 138 championship. Class A, No. 7-ranked Derek Herman from USC upset Class A, No. 4-ranked T.J. Fulton from Wabasso/Red Rock Central in a 9-2 decision to take third place.

Tony Hubbard from Alexandria upset Class A, No. 7-ranked Trio in the 145 championship, defeating him in an 11-5 decision.

Chris Pfarr, the Class A, No. 2-ranked wrestler from Le Sueur-Henderson, defeated Josh Selly from Tri-City United in a 5-3 decision for first place in the 160 bracket. Wabasso/Red Rock Central's Mitchell Schroepfer defeated Xavier Dahlgren from Mankato West in a 6-1 decision for third place.

Sibley East's Aaron Bates defeated BOLD's Alex Hatch 6-5 in overtime for a third-place finish at 170.

USC's Colten Carlson, the Class A, No. 5-ranked 182-pounder, took first by defeating Daniel Vitale from Sartell in a 1-0 decision. Wabasso/Red Rock Central's Jordan Schroepfer pinned Marshall's Campbell Hofstetter in 56 seconds to take third place at 182.

Mankato West's Tyler Jakes outlasted Dawson-Boyd/Lac Qui Parle Valley's Jordan Staab by winning a 9-5 decision for the title at 195. Worthington's Carson Hagen took third, downing Maple River's Casey Decker 9-1 in a major decision.

Sibley East's Nathan Rose dominated the 220 championship, beating Justin Cumberbatch from Alexandria 20-5 in a technical fall. Sartell's Brady Goeble took third by defeating Litchfield's Max Kaping, 10-4.

Nath, from Marshall, bounced back from his loss to F/MCW's Hines, finishing third and pinning Wabasso/Red Rock Central's Alex Schroepfer in 1:40.

The Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls travel to St. Peter for a 7 p.m. dual meet on Friday.

Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther travels to Waterville for a triangular against St. Peter and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
