FAIRMONT - Service for Helen L. Whitehead will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at Calvary Baptist Church in Granada, Minn. Private family interment will be in Fairview Memorial Park in Fairmont. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Helen passed away Saturday afternoon, Dec. 15, 2012, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont.
Helen Louise (Martens) Whitehead was born on May 24, 1922, in Elm Creek Township, Martin County, Minn. She was the daughter of Otto and Carolyn (Hagemann) Martens. She attended a rural school in Elm Creek Township and later graduated from Sherburn High School.
On Aug. 28, 1940, Helen was united in marriage to Keith Whitehead in Sherburn, Minn. This union was blessed with three children. The couple lived in Elm Creek Township for nine years before moving to a farm in Rolling Green Township. After Keith retired in 1983, the couple enjoyed their winters in Weslaco, Texas. The couple shared 68 years together before Keith passed away on January 20, 2009.
Helen gave her life to the Lord Jesus Christ on September 28, 1959. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Granada, Minn., where she served her Lord faithfully.
Helen enjoyed gardening, baking, crocheting and playing games with family and friends. She did a lot of bread baking and always had oatmeal raisin cookies ready for her grandchildren. Helen had a special way with a crochet hook and lovingly made afghans for all the grandchildren when they married.
Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Dennis Whitehead and his wife, Sherry, of Sebring, Fla., and Bruce Whitehead and his wife, Deborah, of Welcome, Minn.; daughter, Janice Larson and her husband, Howard, of Buffalo, Minn.; grandchildren, Scott (Joy) Whitehead, Lisa (Woodrow) Buchanan, Andrew Whitehead, Cindy (Glenn) Lowe, Travis (Kristy) Larson, Brenda (Matt) Bauer, Jason (Debby) Whitehead, and Heather (Dennis) Lawton; 28 grandchildren; three great-great grandchild; siblings, Lloyd (Charlene) Martens, Donna Nawrocki, and Marilyn (Darrel) Anderson; sisters-in-law, Fay Evjen and Althea Whitehead; many other relatives and friends. Along with her parents, Otto and Carolyn Martens, Helen was also preceded in death by her husband, Keith Whitehead, and brother, Sydney Martens.
