Cardinal hoopsters belt USC, Windom

WELLS - Junior guard Mitch Pfingsten delivered a game-best 21 points behind 8-for-14 shooting from the field to help engineer the Class 2A, No. 5-ranked Fairmont Cardinals' 74-52 triumph over the United South Central Rebels during non-league basketball action Tuesday night in Wells.

Pfingsten also garnered a team-high eight rebounds to complement three assists, while teammates Jay Ruen and Josh Eversman each supplied 12 points to the winning effort. Ruen also hauled down six boards and distributed three assists, while Eversman grabbed five rebounds.

Nick Roggow and Levi Becker each netted nine points to round out Fairmont's balanced scoring performance.

The Cardinals scorched the nets on 21 of 36 shots from 2-point range for 58 percent, connected on 5 of 12 from behind the arc and blistered the cotton cords on 17 of 21 free throws for 81 percent.

Steve Voigt scored 17 points to top USC, while Cole Stencel contributed 14 points.

The Rebels made 11 of 35 shots from 2-point territory, 5 of 17 from behind the arc and 15 of 25 at the free throw line.

Fairmont (3-1) plays host to Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

United South Central posted a 54-41 victory over Fairmont during B-squad action Tuesday.

Spencer Chirpich collected 16 points, six rebounds and six steals to pace the Cardinals' effort, while teammate Ben Abel produced eight points and six boards.

Kale Fritz added eight points for Fairmont (2-2).

United South Central edged Fairmont, 43-38, during C-squad action on Tuesday.

Tyler Tennyson netted 13 points to top the Cardinals (1-3), while Clayton Maakestad chipped in eight points. Noah Quiring grabbed five rebounds, Josh Liljenquist made three steals and Chris Andrews doled out three assists.

Girls Basketball

Fairmont 58, Windom Area 42 - Junior center Kayla Lardy and sophomore power forward Alexis Christianson each delivered double-double performances to pace the Cardinals' 58-42 non-league victory over the Eagles on Tuesday night in Windom.

Lardy scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to complement three blocked shots and three steals, while Christianson netted 11 points to complement a game-best 12 boards.

Kristen Campe collected eight points and five rebounds for Fairmont, Madison Geerdes netted eight points, while Emily Kim chipped in six points.

The Cardinals connected on 16 of 44 shots from 2-point territory, scorched the nets on 6 of 8 attempts from 3-point range for 75 percent and added 8 of 17 from the free throw line.

Fairmont (1-4, 0-1 South Central) plays host to St. Peter on Thursday.

Courtney Mosloski produced a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds to guide Fairmont to a 50-29 victory over Windom Area during B-squad action on Tuesday in Windom.

Cassidy Krusemark generated 12 points for the Cardinals, Sydney Glienke scored 11 points, while Haley Harder pocketed nine steals.

Windom Area defeated Fairmont, 42-28, during C-squad action Tuesday.

Marissa Voss collected six points, five rebounds and five steals to top the Cardinals. Sophie Brau netted six points and six boards, Larissa Becker tallied six points, while Marisa Nelson scored five.
