Mustangs trample Madelia

MADELIA - Granada-Huntley-East Chain junior center Ryan Shumski's near double-double of 19 points and nine rebounds helped lead the Mustangs boys basketball team to a 64-40 Valley Conference victory over the Madelia Blackhawks on Thursday night in Madelia.

The Mustangs, who managed an 18-point lead by halftime, had three players score in double digits.

GHEC connected on 27 of 52 shots from the floor and added 6 of 15 from the free throw line.

Konnor Kristenson tallied 13 points and snagged nine rebounds for the Mustangs, while teammate Logan Pytleski scored 10 points.

Devin Ulmen scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Blackhawks.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain (1-2) plays host to Mankato Loyola in a 7:30 p.m. nonconference game at East Chain School on Tuesday night.

Madelia (1-3) travels to Alden for a 7:30 p.m. Valley Conference game against Alden-Conger on Tuesday.

Martin County West 61, St. Clair 44 - Austin Krumwiede netted a double-double performance, scoring 14 points and cleaning the glass for 10 rebounds to lead the Mavericks basketball team to a 61-44 Valley Conference victory over the Cyclones on Thursday night in St. Clair.

Cordell Weber scored 17 points to top Martin County West, which connected on 22 of 42 field goals on the night.

Mitch Sitzmann scored 11 points, grabbed four rebounds and doled out four assists for the Mavericks, while Kyle Brolsma recorded nine points and grabbed five rebounds.

Ryan Kruse scored 17 points to top St. Clair, while Tyler Fandrich and Michael Berry scored 12 and eight points, respectively.

Martin County West (2-0, 1-0 Valley) travels to Nicollet for a 7:30 p.m. Valley Conference game on Tuesday night.

Girls Basketball

Martin Luther 67, Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 52 - The Martin Luther Knights girls basketball team stayed undefeated in the Valley Conference with a 67-52 victory over the visiting Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Knights on Thursday night in Northrop.

Junior Amber Schulz lit up the scoreboard for a game-leading 28 points to go along with seven rebounds and two steals to top the hometown Knights.

Martin Luther connected on 27 of 62 field goals on the game.

Effie Bentz distributed a team-high eight assists and recorded 14 points to go with three steals in the win. Hunter Payne added 13 points and six assists for Martin Luther.

Megan Schroeder led the visiting Knights with 18 points.

Martin Luther (3-1, 3-0 Valley) travels to Okabena for a 7:30 p.m. nonconference game against Southwest Star Concept on Monday.

Newell-Fonda 49, North Union 34 - The Mustangs corralled the Warriors 49-34 during nonconference action on Thursday night in Armstrong.

Renee Maneman and Andrea Christensen led the Mustangs with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Jasmine Clausen and Aurora Oliver each had seven points to lead the Warriors, with Oliver chipping in three steals.

North Union connected on 12 of 36 shots from the field, including 2 of 5 from 3-point range, and added a 6-for-10 effort from the free throw line.

Madison Bollig pulled down six rebounds for the Warriors

North Union (3-1) hosts Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire in a 6 p.m. game tonight in Armstrong.
