WELCOME - Martin County Area junior standout Rebecca Steen swept all four individual pieces of equipment during Thursday night's season-opening gymnastics dual meet in Welcome.

Steen, a perennial state qualifier, generated a stellar 36.55 points to capture the all-around crown to engineer the Magic's 132.875-124.25 non-league victory over the Luverne Cardinals.

While Steen earned first-place totals on the vault (9.25), uneven parallel bars (9.025), balance beam (9.475) and floor exercise (8.8), the Magic's youthful roster displayed its balanced depth in clearing the 130-point barrier out of the starting gate.

In fact, five different Martin County Area specialists - Martha Olson, Sydney Leichtnam, Briana Gratz, Andrea Thate and Lexy Ringnell - produced seven top-four showings during the dual-meet competition.

Olson claimed runner-up honors to Steen on the vault with an 8.725-scored Tsukahara and netted fourth place on the floor (8.4), while Leichtnam pocketed third on the beam with a 7.8-scored routine and chalked up fourth on the unevens (7.65).

Ringnell captured third on the floor with an 8.5-scored performance, while Gratz and Thate completed the Magic's sweep of the top four spots on the unevens with a second-place score of 8.05 and a third-place total of 7.7, respectively.

"We hit all of our bar routines and swept the top four spots, so that's a good way to open on that event," said Martin County Area mentor LeeAnn Steen. "I was very pleased with the way that we performed overall during our first meet."

Steen and Olson rotated back-to-back Tsuks out of the final two spots of the home team's opening five-gymnast vault lineup to highlight a 34.475 team total before the Magic's 1-2-3-4 showing on the unevens created separation on the judges' scorecards via a 32.425-27.525 edge over the visiting Cardinals.

Steen added a switch leap into a straddle jump to her beam routine and the new maneuver paced her meet-best mark of 9.475, while Leichtnam added scoring punch with her third-place total of 7.8.

Ringnell, Olson and Steen then literally tumbled to top-four showings on the floor to seal the Magic's season-opening triumph.

Martin County Area (1-0) competes in the Blue Earth Area Invitational at 11 a.m. Saturday in Winnebago.
