After Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Army and was in the 515th Parachute Division, where he was a radio operator. After his discharge, he purchased Dave's Tydol Service Station, and owned it until 1969, when he purchased the vacant building across the street and created Miner Skelly Service. His son, Stevan, took over in 1985, and Shorty continued to help out until his retirement. After Barbara's death in 1979, he was later remarried to Fern Kaderabek in Jackson, Minn., in 1987.

Shorty is survived by his son, Stevan (Susan) Miner of Winnebago; his daughter, Vicki (Scott) Wiltse of Blue Earth; his son, Jim (Kathy) Miner of Rochester; and two granddaughters - Taylor and Erin Wiltse.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Barbara Miner; his second wife, Fern Kaderabek in 2000; a brother, Melvin Miner; sisters, Winnie Masters and Florence "Toots" Lutter; and a granddaughter, Lauren Wiltse.
