FAIRMONT - Memorial service for Robert "Max" Speer of Fairmont, Minn., will be 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Welcome, Minn. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Max Speer was born Feb. 22, 1919, in Fairfield, Iowa, to Irvin and Vena (Winslow) Speer. Max was the eldest of six children. The family resided in Rock Island, Ill.
Max proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He trained flight mechanics and was proud to have taught them at Yale.
Max married his wife Elaine 69 years ago and together they raised three children:?Stephen, Daniel and Laurelei (Farley).
Max owned and operated an elevator contracting firm, Elevators Inc., in the Twin Cities. Many of the machines his company installed are still in operation around the state.
Max retired at the young age of 50 and enjoyed many years traveling the southern United States and Mexico with his wife, the late Elaine (Reetz) Speer. Max was always up for an adventure, whether it was camping on the beach in Florida, deer hunting in the north woods of Minnesota and the terrain of Wyoming, piloting his small plane across the country, or speeding down back country roads on his Harley, he was hard to slow down!
In his later years, Max and Elaine "settled" down into a comfortable life in northern Minnesota where they lived for 20+ years. It was here, on Lake Pickerel, just outside of Effie, Minn., where you could find Max enjoying the finer things in life, early-morning fishing trips, long rides through the woods on his four-wheeler or snowmobile, hunting, lounging on the deck to watch the water and wildlife and plenty of good company with friends, were what he enjoyed most.
Max was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine; parents, Irvin and Vena Speer; and son, Daniel Speer.
He leaves behind son, Steve Speer (Ana Lee); daughter, Laurelei Farley (Joe); daughter-in-law, Melody Johnson; grandchildren, Sue, Allen, Erik, Jessica, Andy and Elaine; eight great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and many much loved friends.
