To the Editor:
On behalf of the teachers at Fairmont Area Schools, I would like to take this time to say 'thank you' to those community members who supported ads for the referendum, supplied the lawn signs and visited with your friends, relatives and neighbors on the importance of passing the referendum for our children. We appreciated those voting yes to make a brighter future for our Fairmont students and community.
Nov. 11-17 will mark the 91st annual observance of American Education Week. AEW spotlights the importance of providing every child in America with a quality public education from kindergarten through college, and the need for everyone to do his or her part in making public schools great.
Our annual tagline, "Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility," highlights the importance of bringing together educators, parents, students and communities in a unified effort to build great public schools now and into the future.
Today's teachers do more than teach basic skills. They nurture and inspire children despite obstacles. They help students learn essential skills not always measured in testing, such as critical thinking, conflict resolution, cooperation and problem-solving, which help students throughout life. Teachers work tirelessly to help their students be the best that they can be.
Our local teachers association, Education Minnesota Fairmont, has several activities planned for AEW. Students from preK-Jr/Sr high grade levels have prepared public service announcements that will be aired throughout the week on our local radio, the staff is having a food drive with the food being donated to the local food shelf, and individual classroom teachers are doing activities related to this special week of the year. With these activities, we are joining millions of Americans nationwide in NEA's American Education Week celebration by spreading the word about the important role of great public schools in the lives of students.
Community members are invited into the schools to see the job we are doing as educators. We would love to show you what we do each day. We are proud of the job we do and with your help every child can succeed.
Thank you for reading this letter. I'm proud to represent the dedicated teachers in the Fairmont Area Schools that work hard every day to help your children and make a difference in the lives of the students they teach.
