FAIRMONT - Funeral services for Paul E. Gerhardt, 90, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at St. John's United Church of Christ in Fairmont. Burial will be following the service in the Fairview Memorial Park Cemetery in Fairmont. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today, Oct. 18, 2012, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont with a Masonic Service held 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, by the Chain Lakes Masonic Lodge #64 AF & AM.

Visitation will continue one hour prior to the time of service beginning 9:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at St. John's United Church of Christ in Fairmont. Paul passed away Monday evening, Oct. 15, 2012, at Mayo Clinic Health System-Fairmont. Lakeview Funeral Home of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Paul Ernest Gerhardt was born Dec. 4, 1921, in Rolling Green Township, Martin County, Minn., the son of George and Clara (Martins) Gerhardt. He attended country school in Rolling Green Township, finishing his education with his eighth-grade graduation. Following his graduation, Paul helped out at home on the farm, working with dairy cattle and helping to feed the cattle, pigs, chickens, sheep and horses; horses being his favorite to work with. The family also farmed corn, oats, alfalfa, flax, sugar beets and soybeans.

On Feb. 15, 1942, Paul was united in marriage to Gloria Smith at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Welcome, Minn. Together the couple made their home on various farms in Martin County where they were blessed with six children:?Wayne, Elaine, Ronald, Beverly, Milah and Bradley. Paul loved farming and took pride in hard work and providing for his family. In addition to farming, Paul worked for 30 years as a Federal Crop Insurance employee, working his way up to district director prior to retiring in 1987.

Paul was very active in his community, serving as a school board member for District #51 and also a church board member at both the St. Paul's UCC Church in Welcome and the St. John's UCC Church in Fairmont. He also served on the Welcome Creamery Board; the Northern Division Corporate Board in Springfield, Mo., and Kansas City, Mo.; the Fairmont Community Hospital Board, the Mid-America Dairy Men's Board, the Martin County Fair Board and was past commissioner of the Gas Pipeline Division. Paul completed one term as a county commissioner from 1968 to 1969, and also served one term as the District 27 state representative from 1970 to 1971. Paul was a member of the Chain Lakes Masonic Lodge #64, Low 12 Club, the Martin County Conservation Club and an active member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Fairmont.

In his spare time, Paul treasured spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by those who loved him and called him friend.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Gloria Gerhardt of Fairmont, Minn.; children, Wayne Gerhardt and his wife, Laurie of Alexandria, Minn., Elaine Gerhardt of Hugo, Minn., Ronald Gerhardt and his wife, Vicki of Sherburn, Minn., Beverly Bauman and her husband, Todd of East Chain, Minn.; Milah Howlett and her husband, Joel of Lino Lakes, Minn., and Brad Gerhardt and his wife, Nyla of Fairmont, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brothers, Robert Gerhardt and his wife, Doris of Fairmont, Minn., and Albert Gerhardt and his wife, Gladys of Fairmont, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Koosman of St. Croix Falls, Wis., and Gladys Gerhardt of Barrett, Minn.; brother-in-law, Richard Smith of Nebraska; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, George and Clara Gerhardt; an infant son, Ervin George Gerhardt; three sisters, Rosella Langford, Lillian Hartwig and Helen Shaw; two brothers, Marvin Gerhardt and Donald Gerhardt; a grandson, John Gerhardt; a great-granddaughter, Charity Borchardt; as well as many other relatives.
