FAIRMONT - A fire destroyed two camping trailers at RJ's Campground on Monday afternoon.
The call came in shortly before 1 p.m., when a passerby noticed the smoke. A large black plume could be seen several miles away from the campground, located eight miles south of Fairmont on South Silver Lake.
While the fire was quickly contained, there was not enough left of the trailer where the fire originated to determine a cause for the blaze.
BURNT?— Firefighters put out a burning camping trailer owned by Oren Liljendahl at RJs Campground. There was so little of the trailer left that firefighters were unable to determine a cause of the fire.
"There was nothing left to investigate," said Fairmont Fire Chief Doug Borchardt. "No one had been at that trailer for two weeks, and the other one was also vacant ... If someone had been in there painting or something, then we would have something to go on."
The owner of the first trailer is Oren Liljendahl, while the second trailer lost belonged to Doug Schwarz of Truman.
Both trailers were considered total losses. Borchardt estimated the monetary amount loss around $30,000.
Firefighters spent about two hours at the scene with assistance from Ceylon and Armstrong fire departments and Armstrong ambulance.
