FHS finishes 2nd at invite

FAIRMONT - Camilla Hermanrud finished first in the fourth singles bracket to help guide the Fairmont girls tennis team to a second-place team finish at the Mankato West Invite on Saturday in Mankato.

Hermanrud defeated New London-Spicer's Taylor Bengtson in straight sets of the first round, 6-0, 6-0. In the second round, Chaska's Kaley DeCou challenged Hermanrud, winning the first set 7-6. Hermanrud charged back to win the second set 6-4 and won in a third-set tiebreaker 10-5.

In the championship match, Hermanrud downed Mankato West's Madeline Valentine in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to finish first.

Missy Viesselman won two of her three matches at third singles to take home second-place honors.

Viesselman matched up with Morgan Jensen from Chaska in the first round. The players split sets, with Jensen winning the first 7-5 before Viesselman took the second 6-0, and then claimed the victory with a 10-7 win in the third-set tiebreaker.

Viesselman then faced off against Mankato East's Olivia Lund in the second round, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

In the championship match, Viesselman faced Julia Snelson from Mankato West and lost 6-2, 6-0 to finish second.

Allison Moeller won her first match at second singles, beating New London-Spicer's Abby Nelson 6-4, 6-2, en route to a third-place finish. Moeller's second match put her up against Mankato West's Andrea Erdman. Erdman won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

Moeller closed out her day with a victory, defeating Lauren Willkom from Chaska 6-3, 6-2 to capture third place.

Abby Fitzgerald and Sophie Shelgren teamed up at first doubles for a fourth-place finish. They quickly won in the first round, defeating New Ulm's Marissa Johnson and Hannah Jakel 6-3, 6-3. Mankato East's Kjersten Lemke and Paige Lingbeck defeated Fitzgerand and Shelgren in the second round 2-6, 6-2, 11-9. And New London-Spicer's Wally Gustafson and Kristin Lewis won in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 over Fitzgerald and Shelgren.

Fairmont's Andrea Carstensen and Marina Rufli teamed up at second doubles to win the consolation match.

The duo matched up against Melissa Lager and Meaghan Haley from Mankato West in the first round, dropping straight sets, 6-2, 6-0 to take the loss.

Carstensen and Rufli downed New Ulm's Gracelyn Sarkar and Sicily Trullinger 6-2, 6-0 in the second match, before defeating Kendra Gronseth and Anna Cook 7-5, 6-3 in their final match.

Briana Gratz and Jill Paris secured one win at second doubles, beating New Ulm's Emma Vranich and Mattea Sievert 7-5, 6-1 in their final match of the tournament. Mankato East's Justin Paskey and Kaitlin Schore beat Gratz and Paris in their opening match 6-1, 6-1, before Blue Earth Area's Aeli Olsen and Paige Darringon won 6-2, 6-4 in the second round.

At first singles, Aubrey Green defeated Mankato East's Libby Andrego 6-7, 6-4, 11-9 in the first round.

Jordan's Drew DeCorsey won their second round match 6-3, 6-2, before Green dropped her final match 2-6, 1-6 to Mankato West's Lauren Makela.

Fairmont (7-3) hosts St. Peter at 4:30 p.m. today in Fairmont.

Blue Earth Area's Karli Olsen and Natali Fellows claimed third place to top the Bucs finishers at the Mankato West Invite on Saturday in Mankato.

Olsen played third singles and Fellows played fourth singles, both going 2-1 in the tournament to claim third-place honors.

After dropping her opening match to Mankato West, Olsen roared back for two victories to claim third.

Fellows won her opening match over New London-Spicer, but Mankato West sent her to the consolation bracket where she won her final match to claim third.

The Bucs' third singles, Kaitlyn Olsen, first doubles Karleigh Wolff and Linsey Prokop, and second doubles, Aeli Olson and Paige Darrington each claimed fifth place.

Kaitlyn Olsen lost her opening round match to Jordan, before splitting her next two matches to claim fifth.

Wolff and Prokop lost to Mankato West in their opening match of first doubles action before winning the next two matches to claim fifth.

The second doubles pair of Aeli Olsen and Darrington lost to Chaska before beating Fairmont's Gratz and Paris 6-2, 6-4, in the second round.

Blue Earth Area first singles player Annika Wilhelmi lost her first two matches but won her third to finish 1-2 in the tournament.

Kali Viland and Adrien Wifflieff paired up at third doubles to finish 1-2, including an opening round loss to Jordan in the tournament.

Blue Earth Area (7-3) hosts Le Center at 4:15 p.m. today at Schroeder Courts in Blue Earth.
