FAIRMONT - The Fairmont Area Cardinal boys soccer team held off the Waseca Bluejays for a 3-2 South Central Conference win on Tuesday in Fairmont.

Senior Lucas Miles scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on Brock Johnson's pass at 24:56 of the second half to make it 3-0.

"Lucas played well for us today. He scored, but he also is playing really selfless and doing some great passing," said Fairmont Area coach Jeff Kot. "He played stopper for us today, and did a good job of trying to control things in the middle of the field."

In the first half, Grant Becker worked his way out of some congestion to net the first goal from the left side, unassisted, at 26:41 to make it 1-0.

Sophomore Derek Hunwardsen took a pass from Evan Ward on Waseca's doorstep for the second goal at 6:07.

Waseca came back strong in the second half and Cesar Gallegos netted two goals for the Bluejays with time left to tie the game.

With a cluster of people in front of the Cardinal keeper Matt Tennyson, Gallegos was able to gain control on the right side of the net and tally the first Waseca goal at 16:26 to make it 3-1.

Gallegos snuck a second goal past at 5:46 with a pass from Luis Castaneda to make it 3-2.

"They got us out of our game and we were able to hold on to win. If the game were a few more minutes, we'd have been in overtime again," said Kot.

Despite some scoring opportunties, the Bluejays were unable to get the tying goal past Tennyson.

"We will work on our passing at practice this week. We can't get lazy and just send the ball, we need shorter and better passing," said Kot.

Both Waseca goaltender Josh Metzdorff and Tennyson made eight saves in the game. The Bluejays fired 11 shots on goal, while the Cardinals had 14.
