Mavericks blanks Windom in opener

WINDOM - Martin County West junior quarterback Jake Faber completed 15 of 20 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns to launch the Mavericks football team to a 27-0 season-opening nonconference victory over the Windom Area Eagles on Friday night in Windom.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Mavericks exploded during the second quarter to jump out to a 20-0 lead by intermission.

Another touchdown and an extra-point in the third quarter helped seal Martin County West's first win of the season.

Faber connected with senior receivers Austin Krumwiede, Tyson Schuder and Mitch Sitzmann for scoring strikes. Krum-wiede garnered four receptions for a team-best 83 yards and a touchdown.

Sitzmann caught one pass - a 58-yard touchdown - for the Mavericks, while Alex Biehn caught one pass for 19 yards. Schuder made two catches on the game, including one for a touchdown.

The Mavericks' Trevor Schultz led the ground game with nine carries for 50 yards, while Sitzmann carried six times for 46 yards and added a rushing touchdown.

Windom quarterback Michael Rivera completed 5 of 16 passing for 49 yards. Andrew Pfeffer completed 2 of 2 passing for 17 yards, while Brandon Thongvivong completed one pass for 18 yards.

Thongvivong rushed five times for 34 yards and Rivera carried the ball 23 times for 32 yards to lead the ground game for the Eagles.

Cody Jurgens ran for 16 yards on three carries to add to the offense.

Jacob Gotto caught one pass for 37 yards, while Thongvivong caught two for 15 yards in Windom's passing offense.

Martin County West (1-0) hosts Medford in a Gopher Valley Conference game at 7 p.m. Friday night in Sherburn.
